I've just finished watching these Tropica Aquarium Plants - YouTube .. and then had a quick look at the information available these days on the tropica site about tank layout etc.

The one thing that is very striking - you need to start with a well planted tank, it just makes the rest so much more rewarding.

Yes... This has been the biggest issue in aquascaping in South Africa. The Lack of availability and quantity of true aquatic plants. That also the one thing you pick up when visiting ADA in Japan. They plant the tank, almost completely on setup. This has to do with the plants using up the excess nutrients in the tank on startup, and not allowing algae to take hold. Nice in theory, but I'm almost certain that we would have less algae issues if we also started tanks this way.

Soon we will be able to.

It really is a good idea. @Sean J I noticed in the pics you took of that shop in Japan, they plant the stem right into the substrate. Would they then sell each stem and pull it out of the tank?

@Firefly ... actually Dorry pets does the same (went to the shop for the first time today) .... also AK "plants" the stems direct from import with the lead weight into silica. But I think the planting stems into a nutrient substrate and then do the for sale thing makes loads of sense. In our future I hope to see more shops like dorry pets that are really trying hard to make for a great planted tanks shopping experience, not just a few stems and potted plants dumped into a tank that has some sick fish in it.

I might steal this idea and speak to my boss about it. It makes a lot of sense to promote growth.
