Good morning. In the area I stay in we have the occassional power cut the most resent one has caused an outbreak of ich in the majority of fish in the tank. I have live plants and a pleco in the tank as well the tank is 72l what would be the best way to treat the tank and keep all the fish safe

    Hi Snyper,

Ich is caused by a protozoal organism and cannot be caused by a power fail. You must have had this infection on your fishes before the power fail.

You should treat your tank with one of the good propriety brand medications that are available as treatment for Ich such as Tetra, Sera or Waterlife.

The cheap local medications very often contain older generation medications to which the parasites are resistant and they do not work. Some of these medications also have drastic negative side effects on fish and plants, so please do not go the cheap route, this can have even more negative consequences.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Thanks a lot for the information. I have sera costapur readily available I know it contains malachite green and is aparently bad for the pleco to treat the tank with this should I just use half the recommended dose or how should I go abt it.

    Snyper,

Pure malachite green is not a good option but as it is in the Sera med is perfectly safe.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you use meds at half strength as it will not cure the disease and it also assists the organisms to become resistant to the meds.

Where does this information about the sensitivity of the plecos come from? They are as tough as nails and are not at all sensitive to meds. Tiger loaches can be a bit sensitive but definitely not plecos, that is for sure.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
