Hi, has anyone had any success getting ottos to eat dry food? What is a good method? I have 4 in a planted community 4 foot tank that is being stripped of any algae. They completely ignore any dry food. @Nicci ? YouTube's Rachel O'Leary suggests having a large group but that gets expensive if they dont do well when the algae runs out. Seems like doubling down. I considered sticking some Hikari mini algae wafers into a zucchini so that they get to it accidentally and learn that it is food.

His tummy is full, I wouldn’t worry too much- they’ll find food

I've found that some herbivores are picky about the type of wafer you offer them, or rather, brand. Maybe try another brand if you can? They're all made of slightly different ingredients so taste can be a real factor.

Otherwise, I see nothing wrong with sharing a salad with your pet

Coming to think of it, my ottos enjoy peeled cucumber on a fork (actually meant to trap ramshorns)

My ottos enjoy pretty much any veg I thinly slice and put into the tank.
    Mulberry leaves
    Sweet potato
    Carrot
    Cucumber
    Broccoli
    Baby Spinach
    Courgette

All of those aside the ottos have been seen taking on the fierce Amanos for a bite of a algae wafer or protein pellet if it goes past them maybe it’s just a taste but they do go for it. My general more than likely unpopular opinion is that if the fish is hungry enough it will figure out that it’s food so I wouldn’t worry.

Also find someone with access to a mulberry tree and build your yearly stock pile of dry ones now or swing past me and I can give you a bag of fresh ones for the freezer or drying. This does obviously extend the invite to everyone!

I’ve kind of forgotten that I have a mulberry tree  one can use the leaves fresh, right? Good for shrimp also, I believe?

In my opinion fresh is best, I just wash and blanch then add it usually takes half a day for it to be noticeably eaten but overnight it’s gone. The drying I only do as a backup

Only thing is Oto's aren't 100% herbivorious and will eat brineshrimp, bloodworms, shrimppellets, etc....

One of the ways to let them to get used to other food is to crumble. They,ll eat it from the leafs and bottom.

Everything in my tank eats this. The Amano shrimp fight for it, the Cory's eat it, the Tiger hillstream loaches love it and the Otto also eats it.

I bought it when I couldn't find any sinking food for the Banjo catfish. And all my fish love it. I am sure there are probably better food for each specie but this work really well in my tank.20201108_080841.jpg

What you could also do is put a stone or piece of wood in an open container of water in a sunny spot in the garden.
After a week or so, it should be covered in algae. Rinse before putting in your tank, and start the next one.
Rotating like this should give you an almost continuous supply of algae for the Ottos
