the torpedo barbs are being discussed on another thread and i saw these in person and they really make an impression as a shoal.2 drawbacks though for me being the size and the origin(asian) and my tank is a somewhat amazon biotope i ue that term very loosely though.also their activeness might be a problem or a bonus depending on what you like.then you got the rummy noses which look like a miniature version of the torpedo barbs are from the right place and of a peaceful nature.both are high up on my list for next shoaling fish for my 5 foot.

perfectly correct, atho the torpedo barbs offer more in terms of colour, the rummy nose tetra will grow to only 5cm max, are very tight schoolers and are much much more peaceful and every bit as active. i currently have 20 of them in a 1,2m tank, the result is some awesome schooling.

rummy noses are also way way cheaper than torpedo barbs and you could probably get 10 rummynose for the price of 1 torpedo barb.

remember rummynose tetras prefer warmer waters, i.e 27deg to 30 deg.

you could get away with massive school of them in a 1,5m tank as the bio load for these fish is very small.

they do well with cardinals, discus and clown loaches. all of whom happen to prefer the warmer temperatures coincedentally.

if the red nose stays consistently pale, its time for that water change.

Hi Oscar Freak

I also dont find the size of the Torpedo Barb appealing. I recently bought rummynose from a forum member and they are awesome - so much energy, and colur - keeps the tank very exciting esp at feeeding time. In my tanks they are like the leaders. I have a shoal of 5 and the strongly influence the movement of the other shoals - 5 Cardinal Tets, 5 Black Neons, 5 Harlequin Tets. IMO, I would say go for the Rummynose.

hi @Breado, what size tank do you have?

if you have a large enough tank, i strongly suggest you up the numbers of those schools, what you currently have are the absolute minimum recommended numbers to keep them happy..

cheers :)

I had Torpedo Barbs for a while.
The drawback as has been said above, is that they are expensive.

Also, I found mine didn't transport well.
2 of the original 5 I got died within 12 hours of being introduced to my tank.
The lfs replaced them f.o.c. but one of these replacments didn't make it either.

When I was down to 2 fish I rehomed these with a friend who lives around the corner from me.

My opinion regarding shoaling fish is size does matter..... smaller is better! Go for the rummy nose!

... At least my minds made up. They do look gorgeous and the temp factor seals the logical side of things as I am looking to eventually keep discus.

IMO - & note this is opinion only - LOL

To me they both look like they couldn't decide on a design scheme so they said, "oh, just give us everything!".

Drip them in slowly with aeration - they can "suffocate" if there is not sufficient oxygen in their water and fast changes in water quality are not appreciated at all.

My shoal of 7 Torpedo’s are a feast and I will recommend them ALWAYS – buy small ones and when they get to large, donate it to me ...... he he he he he:bigsmile:

Oscar saw the ones you are talking about and they are nice, I think they would make a nice shoal.

Yup, apparently this is the case.
I introduced them in slowly, but I guess they just couldn't handle it.
Pity, as they are nice fish.

Mythbuster time: Torpedo's dont chow plants.... Mate of mine's got 9 in a heavily planted tanks with mostly Crypts etc but also soft leafed stuff like Ambulia,Pixie lilly and Hygrophila.... no nom, nom, nomming going on at all....
Also dont think WBS would have included them in that one planted tank he did a while back if they where inclined to eat plants.... Guys like him in shihr worry more bout the plants than the fish....lol

Guess the only question to me is - do I have enough space for the Torpedoes? Yes = cool ; No = Ag well - there's allways Rummynoses then....lol.

Hi mydummyname

I agree 100% with you comment.

The tank is a 1.5m*650mm*650mm - large enough for more. It was the first time I was going for these little critters but now I love them, so will definately look at getting more. The live in a planted tank with 5 Angels, 6 Discus and the rest of the tiny crew, but they really make the tank look happy and exciting.

So yes, definately going to get more of 'em
