Anyone got a take on who the top pet stores/ breeders are around the joburg area? Please take value for money into account. I know of kenilworth (rifle range) and turfpet hyper.
    thanks

I find the guys on the east rand are more competitive along with Dave from Kenilworth, maybe because there are more stores.

Petstop in Pta is a drive for us Joburgers, but worth it as far as quailty and price are concerned.

My 2c, use it, don't use it...

    Not an easy answer.

Some LPS are just that a store that sells product that other import or breed, then you have others that import fish / plants etc them selves, others that have the dealership for some hardware and they seldom succeeded at being a good distributor and others that a few times a year land a container and survive of that as both direct to client and resell to the smaller LPS. We also have a select few that will either do a gray import and sell that typically below RRP.

Sadly imports and value for money is becoming harder with our R/$, since value for money is relative to what you are looking for and what your alternative source is maybe update your profile so that we can see what area you are in? Taking travel time / cost into consideration it is hardly worth traveling after a R5 price difference for a tetra if petrol will wipe that saving out.

Ja as Ferdi says, its a tough 1, I think building up a relationship with the owner or manager is the important part, and showing your support to a particular lfs, that way he/she can return the favor. But then again nothing better then lfs hopping!

I find Petmasters in Boksburg to the best option for equipment & Food, they are far cheaper than any others I have been to. Kenilworth is undoubtedly the best option for live stock based on quality and variety on the malawi side and Wild on Pets in Greenstone has the best range of T5 tubes and plants.

I have yet to find a one stop shop when it comes to my addiction :embarrest:

Andrews Aquatic wholesalers is my choice in the South of Jozi. He is situated in Haddon (Next to Glen Vista), with quality fish and equipment and competitively priced as well.

Wild on Pets is decent, its in the Edenvale/Modderfontein area. They generally have whatever I need for all my creatures. Large equipment sections, reptile section, dog treats, livestock/plants and they have an all round helpful and friendly manner.

Its a pretty nice store, if you go there, you should also visit the many other pet stores in the nearby area. There are quite a few

If you are into Malawis, prepare to leave there broke! If you need to decorate your tank, prepare to leave broke :worried:

    They have some amazing stuff.

"Value for Money" is an extremely poor way to compare stores when it comes to stuff like livestock, or even hardware.

You may purchase 20 Neons at "store a" for R10 each, and 50% die, or by 10 neons at "store b" for R20 each and none die. Which is better value for money? At the time of the purchase, store-a certainly sounds to be the best "value for money". Having visited many stores in my short stay in the hobby, I have come to the realization that you literally get what you pay for... and that comes down to hardware too.

For me, value for money is knowing that
    1) I am getting healthy fish, and I am sold the CORRECT hardware/meds/food.
    2) I am getting professional service
    3) I am getting an agreed upon price. (Notice price is LAST)

When it comes to my purchases:
If I KNOW what I want with regards to food and hardware- Animal Kingdom hillfox and Clearwater
If I want to browse through a range of products for a solution- Retail Crossing LPS or Northgate.
    Lifestock- Clearwater without a doubt.
For general fish and plants- Jungle aquatics, Dory's and BetterWeather.

Bought my tank there ... Good people to deal with. But make sure you do your homework on the fish you like before buying them...As a beginner i have been caught once too many times already.
