how does one know when you have to many fish in your tank?

the reason why i ask is, tonight, my GF's tank sprung a leak,,,at the bottom...

she had alot of gupiies, danios, and tetras,

and now all of them are in my tank.

    in the tank now is.

    10 cardinals
    3 Neons
    8 Widow Tetras
    2 Glowlights
    3 Lemon tetras
    3 Cory's
    7 Khuli's
    1 Gourami
2 big and 2 Small Plecs
    a few Guppies (10-15)

all in the 3ft tank, good filtration, 2 HOB filters, and i kept the undergravel filters in, so i connected them just to be on the safe side, will this be fine for a week or so, just until i fixed her tank?

i also did a 10% water change and gravel vac?

    Thanks

    Vez

Sounds OK... If you can't test for ammonia and/or nitrites, just keep an eye on the fish. They will display uncertain behavior when the water isn't right. I would also do some 10% w/c every second day.... with the added fish you will have excess waste... this could lead to another ammonia spike, however if the filter is fairly mature, you shouldn't have this problem.

    Hi Vez,

I have read up about this and folks talk about a heavy fish load. It appears that if you have too many fishes then the weight of the fishes is too high and then this causes the tank to leak. I think you need to be careful with so many fishes.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Depends on how big your guppy is but of you have 200 then it becomes a factor, you know!

This problem was found when they keep freshwater stingrays, they are apparently very heavy and tanks have to be specially reinforced when you keep them. When it gets really heavy is when they are pregnant.

    Google: freshwater stingray

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Athol,

The spelling of the word is "Viola" it is French.

But you have still not got it right.

When fish are full of eggs we say they are gravid (you can google again, if you don't believe me). So what happens with these pregnant fishes is that their specific gravidy goes up that that is why they are heavy, you see.

Vez, you know in Afrikaans, you call your wife brother your "swaar". Well if you translate that it means you could call him a heavy.

    Wragtag Boet!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Wow! As a newbie this is extremely en-lighten-ing information. Thanks for this! I'll have to ensure I don't add gravid fish to my tank. I think if I add my swaer to the tank I might have a problem :)

Yes and some are slower than others, translated into Afrikaans: (Ek het dit wragtag geniet dat die Iere die Engelse op hulle moer gegee het met die krieket, ek hoop al die Afrikaanse O'Kennedys sal jubel). Sorry guys, I gave a rather lengthy translation because these guys are a little slow.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
