I actually figured this out on my own through a few projects that I'm working on. I've been wanting to test if it was fish safe. Glad someone else is already doing it.

Playing with some other stuff too. Still testing to see what the resulting effects are but, those are chemical based. Not organic like the enzyme method.

There's a product called splosht (spelling) ...which is made up of something similar (if not the same) ingredients.

Also reading into fish nutrition and learning how you aquaculture guys formulate feed from a scientific perspective. I came up with some of my own vitamin heavy formulas which will hopefully lead to better growth rates with less waste.

Just some prospective on these guys aqua scaping abilitys20180606_174946.jpg , when I left for work this morning the plant in the picture was planted in the corner, these two guys decided they were going to build thier nests either side of the stump roots, probably move about 4 spades worth of sand and stone..if not more. I tried to use my hand to size but did the opposite. The fish is about the size of my hand and the plant is almost twice the size of an adults head.

Just a quick update, took your advice MariaS , I modified a smaller tank to hold the batting in layers then running over a diy algea scrubber which still needs to grow the algae, I did however try and seed it with hair algae. Using prime but haven't noticed any difference using it other than a cost saving! Nitrates have come down but are still high.20180609_193543.jpg 20180609_193530.jpg

    It looks good @RobK

Im not sure how long it will take to bring the nitrates down as I have always used this method and have never had a nitrate problem

I would assume it will take a little while (couple days maybe?) to make any difference but if possible some water changes in the meantime could speed up the process

I have just gone through this thread again as I couldn't remember the tank dimensions etc..
No offence meant... I think the amount of water you are taking out during water changes might (personally I feel is not) be enough
30% on a big tank with messy fish... ummmm... I feel is too little
We doing 50 to 80% weekly..... I would suggest that if possible, increase your water change amount to 50/60% even if you only do this much every second week and 30% on alternate weeks
I am positive this is one part of the problem.. just a suggestion...
