What do you guys think of a DIY PVC canister filter for a 600L tank. Works or not ?

l/h could be an issue on small diameter - what are you aiming for ?

You can have a look at this video: . The guy explains what to use and how to calculate how large your pipe needs to be. I tried something similar, but my biggest problem was to get the twist cap to seal, as the twist cap I got didn't have a gasket. I tried finding a twist cap with a gasket, but is still unsuccessful. Hope you have better luck.

If big enough with sufficient flow and media it should work

i currently have one running on my 100l aquarium and i love it. however as wesselw said, getting the twist cap to seal is quite an issue. i eventually made my own seal for the cap using an old inner car tyre tube and it seals fine now after a good tight squeeze. it all depends though on how you want to make it. i feel that it can become quite complicated to make quite quickly especially for a big tank as you will probably want compartments etc but im keen to see it if you do make one. mine is a very basic one, virtually just a tube to hold media with an inlet and outlet.

Seems that flow rate will be a problem. For my 600L tank I need at least 3000L/H. A pump that size wont fit into a 110mm PVC pipe and a pump smaller than that might not make it as the head height is over a meter. Another option would be to scrap the PVC pipe and go for a water tight tupperware.

i am about to build myself one this sunday. have all the parts i need i think. luckily for me the tank i'll be using it on is not that high off the ground so the top of the canister will be near the top of my tank.

depending on how loarge you would like to go you could use a water tight bucket. can fit a large pump plus butt loads of media in there. the same oke from that video as another video on the bucket diy canister.

Cool. So I will use a 25L bucket with tight lid and 5000L/H pump. Inlet will be via a siphon. Will it do a good job of keeping the tank clean ?

would imagine it should. it all depends on what kind of flow and direction of it. if set up right it should push all the dirt and poop into the filter. might just need to play around to see what gives the best results. maybe even put a power head in to help if needed

@Stinger I did this with a 3 lock seal bucket and I did this with a 50L blue sealable drum, there are some tricks one has to overcome with this which took many hours to trials and tests before I perfected this, I have also been asked to make these to sell but havent given this thought as the cost would be much less than that of a cannister filter and larger media volumes are achieved:

    Best regards
