Thickness of glass for 1.2 - 1.5m aquarium???

Hi Everyone,

I would like to know your opinion on the best thickness for a 1.2 m or 1.5 m aquarium, I am looking at 2 quotes and the one is 6mm thick glass and the other is 10mm thick glass, the latter is double the price, so I would like to know if it is much better getting thicker glass, and if so, what are the benefits or if 6mm will actually suffice, I am looking at this according to what the long term gain will be, I don't mind paying more if its going to mean it will last longer...

Ok, for a 1.2m 6mm should do fine, but it depends on height? Euro bracing is a must though!

For a 1.5m, I would only use 10mm or even 12mm, and again it depends on height? Also again, bracing is a must!

It depends on the hight of the tank aqua.
If the is a very shallow tank like say 30cm high then 6mm glass will be fine but if you are going up to 60cm then you will have to use 10mm glass but most Standard 1.2m tanks are made with a 8mm Glass.

it depends on your water hieght more than lenth , any thing over 30cm and i would go 10mm or 8mm min.skip the 6mm
the saftey factor will just be so mutch better.less worries in the long run

 

Thanks! yes the quote says it includes bracing (what is that anyway?) - the height is either .45 or .50 so therefore I reckon paying double but getting 10mm is going to be the best in the long run

 

sounds good .do yourself a favour ,take a pic of one the tank builders tanks (the same as the one you want) and post it.
the guys will quickly give you all the info you need .

 

For a 1.5m 10mm glass would be the best but height and width would also need to be taken into account.

 

I recently got a 1.2m tank built (1220 x 450 x 450) and I asked the guy why I should not use 6mm glass and he told me it breaks way to easily under pressure and he recommended that we use 8mm instead. It does cost a bit more but after getting the tank I can say its worth it.

 

I think then since it is def. going to be 45cm (if 1.2m) or 50cm (if 1.5m), whether its 1.2 or 1.5m, it will still have to be 10mm because of the height? is this correct? I will check if he has pics on his blog site and then see if I can post a pic here of one...

thanks Larch, yeah I asked this guy too, and he said if a rock bumps against a 6mm there is a good chance it will crack... but I wanted to make sure with the forum experts before making any decisions

 

Yes that would be the safes way to go.

 

I would go for the biggest i could afford Aqua, thats why i bought a 1,8 x 900 x 900.
But now i am selling it cause of other commitments

thanks f-fish, read through it... how is your tank coming along, did you finish it already? what was the final measurements you went with? I was looking at 1.2 length) x 60 (height) x 45 (width) - but now I am wondering if I am going to be able to reach the back and the bottom... what is the 'Safety Factor'? think im gonna google it quick...

 

LOL - my tank - no wait -- first I had to build the stand http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?t=3996 - here I got some good input from all and it was a fun build no surprises ... and that changed the whole game - so the largest that I can go is 1.8x.6x.6 ... not saying that is what I am going to do - but still.

scuba gear lol its standing empty in my dads garage cause i cant get it through my front door ... and Fiance wants me to sell it , so to keep the peace i am selling it.
but have plans to get 2m X 500 X 500 but she doesnt know that lol
