Is use a outside thermometer. It is very accurate to a point of a degree e.g. 24.9 . It sits on the outside with a probe on the inside of the tank. I used to use those stick on thermometers but the broke to easily.

    Regards
    Peter

if we talking about the flat strips that stick flush to the outside of the tank i got one it it doesnt do a bad job, its usually accurate to with in a degree or so. if i check my heater and then the thermometer. iv often wondered which thermometre is best

I use a floating thermometer that's also a hydrometer it works well !
I also have those stick on strips they are not accurate as they are influenced by outside temperature .
get a name brand and you should be fine .

    cheers

I find the glass tube thermometers break easily. I have now bought the Resun plastic thermometers. They oval shaped and easy to read and clean. No need to strain your eyes. My display tank has a Marltons digital thermometer which gives you the temp inside and outside the tank. I don't see how the sticky strips can ever be accurate.

I also use to use the stick on strip thermo which wasn't that accurate then i used the glass tube thermo and my Bala's kept breaking them so now I'm using the external electronic thermometer with the probe, it gives me the internal and external temps and it has always been accurate. I've never been happier! :)

    From my experience...

    Glass thermometer:
PROS: fairly accurate, cheap, not influenced by outside factors
CONS: break easily, suction cup (if applicable) hardens over time

    Stick on strip thermometer:
PROS: can be accurate (depending on brand), no risk to fish or from fish
CONS: reads outside temperature, can cost slightly more, when touched they become inaccurate

    Digital thermometer:
PROS: very accurate, fish resistant, some can be placed in or out the tank
CONS: expensive, finding batteries can be hard, batteries are expensive

I guess it must be the brand then... I've only worked with the Jewul digital thermometer, and it was all good.

Actually, if you manage to find a good quality stick on strip thermomters - such as the ones done by Hagen - it'll be quite safe from your bigger fish. Plus they work for years, which is exceptional considering how long the cheaper bands last.
