Hi guys, I never paid too much attention at the quality of thermometers but I recently bought quite small fishes and wanted to be sure the water temperature was perfect during water changes. I then used a second thermometer , and then another one, and more and more. At the end I had 3 digitals and 3 normal ones and one for swimming pools. The normal ones had the same reading 24 C. The digital from Boju read 26 but not having the decimals could be anything between 26.1 up to 26.9. The worst disappointment were the two expensive digitals from Juwel. Both of them reading always temperatures with one constant gap of 1 Celsius. I bought the digital thinking they were better and also easier to read for the display. I would like to hear from you and your experiences.

The most accurate ones are the glass type ones with little suction cup.

I also had the Boju digital one and it was always 1.5-2.0 degrees out.

Thank you. Exactly what I came to realize. Too bad to spend more to get rubbish.

I had the SAME trouble - so I went and bought a laboratory grade food thermometer - and it is incredibly accurate. It was not exactly cheap I have to admit - but then we spend thousands of rands on our tanks and fish and then rely on a silly little glass bubble thingy to guard and protect our fish - I think accurate instruments are essential.
As they say - GOEDKOOP IS DUURKOOP !!!

WOW where did you buy this and how much did you pay for it? Something good to spend extra bucks on.

Thank You. I agree with you 100%. Thank God I have a super thermometer which I bought years ago from a chemical supplier and I used it to hand feed 2 baby parrots and their food had to be at a perfect temperature. I will now read the temps in each tank and will see how bad the digitals are.

I got mine from http://www.asstech.co.za. Just checked with them - it is R 213.18 - ( cheaper than I thought!!!) check out their website - it is the TROTEC BT 20 - hand held insertion thermometer. I bought pH buffer liquid and other stuff at the same time so thought I had spent more on it. I am completely happy with this thermometer - incredibly accurate.

I wrote two times in the past few days to the customer service of Juwel and I got the reply just now:

    Dear Oscar,

we thank you very much for your mail. Small temperature fluctuations within + / - 2 degrees are absolute normal.

I think this answer is worth nothing. In my humble opinion 2 degrees Celsius is a drastic gap. What is the point to buy digital thermometers which can read the decimals when they are so wrong? I wish I had known it before and I hope this post can be of any use to future buyers.

Different companies have different tolerance settings.

I don't trust the Boyu- they fluctuated too much
I don't trust the cheap murcery types.... they are just too cheap and nasty... How on earth can you trust that the piece of paper inside there has been put in the right place?
I'm all for the food grade!
