My 3ft cracked the rear glass from the bottom corner at 45 deg angle to the top..... I merely smeared some (thin layer) silicon sealer across, left it for a day and refilled....... Can't help feeling uneasy about this one???

You probably should... the crack is still there, just covered by the silicone for now. The crack is still under pressure and can still therefore crack further or buckle under the weight. It's always best to replace the glass if you can.

The exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I threw out the tank because I knew I would not be at rest with that. Although, I could have done a nice emersed plant tank.

    Regards

My 3ft had a crack in the bottom. Cut some spare glass to fit over it and then smeared it with bostik silicone. Holds so far......

You should have placed a piece of glass over the cracked glass and then seal around and between the 2 pieces of glass.
I bought a Heto Tank with cracked base and fixed it this way. After putting in the gravel no one will see the patch work.

Would just replace the panel. It will burst the day you can least afford to
clean up water and flapping fish.

best is to replace but failing that patch the crack with another glass over the crack this can be done with out empiting the tank and will keep you safe till you can make anouthe plan.

I am also repairig a tank at the moment. There seems to be a variety of marine silicon brands on the market, which I'm tolled are not all the same quality. Some of the various LFSs that make up tanks, promote themselves by saying that they use this fantastic imported make, but is not all silicone imported. I was wondering if this is true and if so which make to go ?

I use Bostik marine silicone. I used it on my bracing and no problems! When they
Replaced my 80l bottom pane I supplied them with the Bostik. Many people will have the
Own recommendations but to me its simply the best

Also used around the house where necessary
