    Hello All

    I need some advice please....
Which is best for a fresh water tank, Tempered Glass Tank or All Glass Tank???

Our previous tank cracked while on holiday and as a result, we lost all our fish.....so I want to make sure this time before I buy a new tank.

tempered glass is cool but will be way expensive.. just make sure that the glass is thick enough or properly braced.. go to a pro tank builder and they should be ale to advise you properly?

NO NO No not tempered glass.Tempered glass will not crack but will shatter into a thousand pieces.
Tempered glass is not flexible enough.
Rather build or have someone build you a tank with a decent safety margin.

Tempered glass is 7 times stronger than plate glass, but any hit hard enough to chip it will cause the entire pane to shatter. That's because tempered glass is under constant tension due to the way it's manufactured and when it breaks it actually explodes. That's why you get lots of little pieces instead of one long crack and a few huge pieces of dangerous glass

    and
    theaquatools.com/building-your-aquarium.

i have read that tempered glass is 4 to 5 times stronger than plate, so is it safe to say that 12mm tempered glass is about the same strength as atleas 48mm plate? hard to believe.
why im asking is ive got 2 sheets of 1,2mx2,6mx12mm tempered and want to make a built in tank of 5,2mx1,2mx700mm, water level at 1m, in theory 48mm plate should hold easily, would love to hear some feed back, got the sheets for free so would be dumb not to build a aquarium

ps whith that amount of water i would rather have a catasrophic failure standing infront of it, than with plate glass, might just end up getting stabbed

I dont think tempered glass can be cut. This glass is cut to preferred size and baked/treated to make it tempered glass.
why not try and sell your glass and have a tank builder make you and "yster" tank.

You can't cut tempered glass, so you will have to have it cut to size before it gets tempered, or you can have tempered glass annealed and then cut. I'm not sure what you are left with after this process, probably plate glass again.

    Hi Guys

I have build a tank 1.7 m x 700 x 1 m water level. The first tank cracked 3 years ago with 10 mm normal glass. So i toughened the next 10 mm glass. Tank is running for 2 years now and yes my Oscars throws pebbles against the glass. It is true that toughened glass is 4 times stronger than normal glass. My tank holds nearly a thousand liters.

    Regards
