So i have purchased another Elite 200w heater. Now i have 2 x 200w Elite heaters. I set it to 27 degrees, however the thermometer on the glass (stuck on the outside of the tank) reads 32 degrees. So i thought maybe that is wrong and purchased another thermometer and put it on the opposite side of the tank (an internal one), and it reads 31 degrees, however both the heaters lights are still on. How reliable are those temp thermometers on the heaters themselves? surely 2 x seperate thermometers (seperate brands, 1 inside the tank and 1 outside the tank, as well as opposite ends of the tank) cant be so wrong?

I decided to turn the temps on the heaters down to 26 degrees now to see if it makes a difference. any thoughts? what should i be trusting? The heater setting or 2 x seperate thermometers?

cross check esp at those high temps ...

In any thank that I have a heater running I would cross check it against a know working instrument be it electronic or a glass thermometer inside vs outside reading can be up to 2 degrees from what I have seen.

got a new heater. set it at 26 degrees. water sits at 28 degrees so much much better. Got a refund from the shop i bought the heater from, so will buy another heater just incase. any recommended heaters that work reliably (not expensive ones....just need to know as i see specific cheap brands in most shops now...but cant remember the names).

There could well be a difference of a degree or two.

But those thermometers you stick on the outside of the glass are not very reliable
The ones that go in the tank are much better.

i have 1 on the outside (on 1 side of the tank) and 1 on the inside (on the opposite end of the tank) and they both pretty much the same temp most of the time. so a cheap heater wont be so bad?

@snail AquaVia is a cheap brand (around R100) that is fairly reliable. It also has a cut-out in case the heater gets stuck in the on position.

Dumped all the cheap brands and went Ehimes, where I use to have 2x300w running I now have 1x 300w in each tank
Temp is 1 degree off but then again, I can use the adjustment dial to make it right.
I also changed from putting the heaters in a sump, to right inside the fish tank.
What I want to achive this year is to see what kind of savings do I get. seeing I am paying R1.20 per kw/usage
So will do this type of report in a year time to see if I actully saved money on eletricity or not..
else it was a expensive test to run with all those heaters wasted
I pay R1200 extra a month just with the heaters running at 25-26...
