Unfortunately not. Marine silicone is still solvent based, what makes it Marine is that it has anti-mildew agents and other such things that make it last longer in situations where there is high humidity or water exposure. Aquarium safe silicone is water-based or contains solvents that dissipate quickly and without harming your fish or plants.
So Gawie, managed to build your tank yet? I built mine in July and it is running beautifully no hassles at all and I was amazed at how easy it was. I used 6mm glas, Dimensions are 1M X 438mm X 430mm,its a little bit bigger than a a 3foot tank, and the nice thing was it didnt cost me more the R250 to built it. Nice to have connections ..
no i haven't yet, it looks to be a bit too diy for me... i Might yet, i want to look at how expensive glass is first, i don't want it to be an expensive screw-up...
if check on the bostik marine tube you will see a fish and a tank and on the back it says sutable for aquarkium use!!!
saw that as well and I ask the people at Habitat if it was safe to use and the all said yes so I wonder........
I'v used the marine silicone for ages to repair/build tanks..didnt have any problems..jst stay away from silicones with anti mildew agents..that'l cause trouble
My bad, the marine silicon is obviously different to what I remember I had a look on the bostik and dow corning websites and it looks like the fish friendly silicones are one-part acetoxy curing.
Hey Here's a spreadsheet you can use to see what thickness glass to use for your tank. Play around with the numbers and see what'll suit you money wise and safety wise. Cheers
