I noticed the other day that my tanks front and back glass is bending:eek: i mean its really bending. scares me to look at it. Whats the chances that it will burst?

    Or is this normal?

    Tank size:
    900x32x35
    Think its a 5mm or 6mm

    Cheers

i don't think glass can bend unless really hot,i have a wooden frame around mine to support the extra water pressure.

I dont think bending is normal or good for any glass. Be prepared for lots of water....

How high is the tank filled? A photo from an oblique angle or from above would be best.

That is why most tanks have euro-bracing. The tank-makers try and make them as affordable as possible, by leaving out bracing and keeping the glass as thin as possible - on the borderline. By reducing the water-level, you will notice that the glass will bend less.
Strongly suggest to put bracing in on the front and back glass!
    Gert.

Its called bowing. If you can see it happening, its time to get some additional bracing

I've got the slightest amount of bending on a 100L tank but its been like that for years... this is why I want to see how bad the bending is.

google it but you should use metal , but if you use thicker glass say 8 or 10mm then you can brace the insides and top with it. brace the sides with metal

Although glass is solid, like steel will flex or bow under given conditions.10mm glass also bows on large tanks and as Gert mentioned that euro bracing is used to overcome this effect.in years gone by tanks where built within a metal frame so no bracing needed.Point to note is that that the pressure of the water on the base of the tank is very low(it is height dependant)

the bowing of glass is very very bad. You are putting huge amounts of extra strain on the glass.if the bowing is more than 1 or 2 mm you should put bracing in as soon as possible or expect a disaster even the slightest bang can shatter the glass into little pieces. just my 2c worth .

Reafer what I meant is that one should brace the outside of the tank with metal like in the pictures
And Also put thicker glass bracing across the base and top .....I know a guy who built a 1000L tank and he did it like this...

Reafer, your pictures demonstrate this well!
I do like the middle one with the wide top bracing allround - but how will you use a HOB? - is it made of glass or perspex?
Just remember that the bracing strips should be slightly (about 5-6mm) shorter than the inside length, as the bracing ends must not touch the end pannels - it will cause a pressure point that could crack the end-pannels! A shorter brace could also be put in the middle to connect the 2 long braces and also hold/"pull" them together.(in a H-shape)
    Nice DIY topic!
    Gert.

Just drained about 15cm of water and still has that 'bend'. Maybe its not taken to that shape? Or maybe not? Too much sand and rocks maybe in there? I am going to sort out the sand and rocks right now if it is caused by that

I'd still like to see a pic of the bend if at all possible.

Repostioned the tank yesterday. Removed all rocks but the one with holes as well as half the sand. Not bending as much now but has a slight bend even when empty.

Here is two pics of the tank. hard to see but it is there
