    I have a stupid question:

How do you calculate the volume of your tank? (I know the substrate and rocks take up a bit... but that I have a rough estimate... but how can I measure the tank to calculate the volume?

(I use to be able to do this in school...)

You measure your tanks height, width and lenght in centimeters and then devide by 1000. So it is H x W x L / 1000. That would give you the water volume in liters

To calculate the volume of your tank use the following formula using cm's.

Length x breadth x height (use the measurement of the height of the water level not of the tank)

    Divide the answer by 1000

Then subtract 10% to take into account displacement by rocks, substrate etc.

    Hope this helps :)

yep, calculations above are correct. I take the full tank dimensions LxHxW(in centimetres) / 1000 and substract 15% to account for displacement and water height...

    Cool beans...

So I was right in my volume... just sounded little considering the size of the tank.

Alternatively, if you have a lot of time to kill...... Take a 10 liter (or 2 liter bottle if you have a day to kill) and fill the tank with water, counting how many buckets you putting in. Dont cheat by using a 20 liter bucket LOL

You right there Veegal. But for a good workout, you need to fetch the water from the outside tap LOL. Will be a good one for Zoom, as I remember he stays on the 3rd floor LOL

Yeah, I do stay on a 3rd floor, and the outside tap is on the ground floor... PLUS according to my calcs, I have a 160l tank, which means, if I use my biggest bucket, of 10l I would be going up and down 18times.

No, my maths isn't that bad... but I have to take into account the spillage going up the stairs!!

Then the 2 liter bottle is your answer. At least you can screw a cap onto it LOL

Veegal, maybe we should do the honourable supporting thing and be there when he does it..... Sitting at the top of the stairs, beer in hand, cheering him on ........

If I drink a beer everytime you get to the top I'll only get through 9 trips MAX!
You could sit at the top with a rope and pull the 2l bottle up...

@ Carping:- Now that sounds like a darn fine idea - as long as I can bring my camera along....

@Zoom:- No Zoom you got it wrong - we never said we'd give YOU a beer, that would be irresponsible of us knowing how you must walk up and down like that. We said WE would support you with beer in the hand :)
