    Hi guys.
So I set up a 3foot extra high tank a few days ago. Tank isabout 580 high and is made from 10mm glass. It’s got a sump and overflow. If youtake a look at my diy potting soil thread you will see it. This was done in my brother’soffice. Everything was fine yesterday only to find out this morning that thedam thing split a seem and emptied out its contents on to the office floor.

The glass is very much together and there is just a small gapwhere it split. Can someone withsome experience please explain to me why on earth could this happen? As anexperienced fish keeper, I insured the thing was 100% level. The only thingextra I added was a heater set at 25 degrees and I am sure it did notmalfunction as the plants were all ok this morning. The only thing is that theywere out water!

Could it have been a bat batch of silicone? This is the onlypart of the hobby that I seriously hate!!!

The split was on the back and side piece.

Did you build the tank yourself? Did it split on the back-side seam below the overflow box?

Hi mate. I did not build the tank. Was done by a tank builder.

It split on the opposite end.

The only thing I can think of is that the seem wasnt put together properly.

It can also be that the silicone was not properly set. I had to replace a 10mm glass panel on my 2m tank and i thought that one week will be ok for the silicone to set but only to realise that it was still wet inside. I had to reseal and wait another two weeks for it to set properly but to speed up the process i set up a fan inside the take to circulate the air and switched on a heater for hour every 3rd day.
