    Hi Guys

Is there anyone or company in PTA east that builds tanks that you might know of? Im guessing it will be cheaper than a LFS, just my guess.

Yes and it is really not that hard to do just got to make sure every thing is 100% right and you have to brace your tank and so on.... and it is a lot of fun building your own tank.

If my calculations are correct then this will be the cost to build a 300l tank, 1.2x50x50

    5mm: R452.10pms
    1.2m: Front, back and bottom = R813.78
    50cm: 2 Sides = R226.05
    Total R1039.83

I might have done this wrong, if i have please correct me.

    For a 6mm its R428.50

    Thanks

i would go for 8mm to be honest 5mm will definately crack and 6mm is touch and go. Those prices are really expensive. i was paying R245 for 8mm (square m).
Go have a look at this site http://www.theaquatools.com/building-your-aquarium

Where did you get your glass from? What company or hardware store was it?

I use National Glass , they are one of the big distributors in SA they should have a branch in PTA

Just a quick tip . If u do deside to make your own tank use lots of masking tape to blank of the parts of the tank that you don't want silicon on it helps to make the tank look neater and easier to put off tape than to try get silicon off the glass and it also helps to stop scratches on the glass while the tank is being built

There is only one in PTA as far as i no. Ill give them a call and see. Brother (Boss) just told me that we have a supplier that deals with glass aswell. So i might get from them, will be much cheaper(Cost price)

Can anyone supply me with an exact step by step method on building a tank from scrach, can't find one. Must include pictures of progress. Will be building one starting next week or week after.

Another question. Is it wise for a 1.2mx50x50 or a 1.2mx45x45? Also im getting a thickness of 10mm. Father thinks i should go that way due to my plans for it.

Thanks alot for the help so far guys.:hello:

Why build a standard 4ft if you can buy one for way cheaper?

Well what size you recommend? Don't want to build it too big because im going to have to buy expensive equipment to suit the tank size. But who knows, let me get your thought and ill make sure to get that price aswell and compare them

Troyfish just buy a standard 4ft tank and use the money you save to make the setup something
    Exceptional.
I think Slagter still have a few tanks for sale, including a 4ft with some equipment.
Look under the clssifieds. That would be my approach.

Unless one builds a extra ordinary tank that makes an impression a tank is only a glass bucket.

It has nothing to do with lazy but rather $.
But if you have the money go for it.
I would rather spend the extra R800 on fish and plants then a standard build tank.
