I was given this dual T5 lighting by my son.... In transit... the one tube was broken... now... the light will not come on when I switch it on... it comes on for a second or 2.... then goes off.... is it essential to have both tubes in for it to work??.... or.. should it work with only one tube???....

Does it have a built in starter somewhere? Maybe the starter is broken?

Yep, you will need two tubes if it is a dual ballast...
Most probably a digital ballast, with no starter.

Most dual fittings have to have both the tubes in to work, UNLESS the fitting has TWO ballasts in it only then will one tube work at a time. You will need the second tube for it to work.
