Heh! Well, it can get a bit overwhelming! Grow out tub "babies" are now doing like the birds & bees do... I still find it hard to believe that generation 4 (yikes... in 1 yr) have somehow survived 15 juvie sailfin mollies, about 8 "teenage" swords and a few young platys, but hey, those little tykes are going STRONG! (I do have a large cloud of java moss in there, so obviously the latest lot of babies hid there!) Tip for you Luis!

Years ago a client had us clean out his koi pond in Kalk Bay...amoung the koi where hundreds of Green Swords and a few Pineapples...

What was amazing was that they mde it thru CT winters and the size of the females - some where up to almost 15cm's long...naturally I begged a few....he,he..Some went into my pond and others into tanks in the house.... record babies i counted was 178... And she ate a few...lol

Wish I still had that strain...sigh

No heaters,nothing.... they lived in my unheated pond in Greenpoint s well....

The Green Sword is the wild form of Xiphopherus helleri... So these must have been a strain that had not been inbred much, hence the large size...Once every now and then they produced the odd Pinapple male as well....

    i've bought a plot 40kms outside of JHB ( 4 years ago )
am building my house and have already dug space for 2 ponds in the yard ( 10 acres )
cant wait to move n get started ( am building cash so might take a while )

have dug 2 huge holes, gonna b a whole new hobby once i move ( guess the experience im getting now is gonna pay off )
allways wanted something else besides Koy, and want them deep but with easy viewing ...

what else goes well in ponds ? will get heaters, temps drop to -4 there in winter !!

If you can foot the heating bill - anything will go into ponds...lol

Mate of mines got a 7 500 liter aquarium outside on his stoep... we made a ingenious black poly pipe heater on roof arangement that is controlled via a solenoid to circulate hot water through it....works quite well and minimal energy wastage compared to conventional geyser elements for heating a pond... Look into that...

lol - one of those meandering threads...

@jack tar ... Usualy one would open a new thread for this, but here goes:
Bala sharks can only be sexed acurately when adult...round the 20cm + mark - Females will be distinctly plumper than males... MMales sleeker with deeper colour in fins...
