Please give us more info as to what he's doing that makes you think this? Please include how often you are feeding, and what you are feeding?

Then we may be able to help?

    Regards
    G!

He is very listless and staying at the surface in one corner of the tank and he is bloated by his bottom front fins (sorry dont know all the technical terms ...)

We feed twice a day very little though so I definately think overfeeding is a problem that I need to rectify. We feed them the Tetra product for Tropical Fish. The one with the brown top.

I have a friend in the States who is VERY clued up about fish as she worked with them for many years and she suggested that might be what is wrong.

Ill try post the pic I took for her yesterday.

Have you checked the water perimeters, Ammonia, Nitrate, Ph, etc. what are the tanks specs and what filtration do you use etc, I am sure someone here will be able to help.

Its hard to tell anything from that picture, but it does appear to be one of the fattest Betta's I've ever seen?

@solex69 is a betta breeder here, and he tends to feed his two or three times a WEEK if I remeber correctly? I would start by not feeding him at all for a day or two, and then only feed him once every other day, and see if things improve? It could be that he has bloat, but I just suspect the overfeeding as the main culprit?

Have you noticed any stringy poop, or is the poop all good?

    Regards
    G!

    I checked the PH.

Alot of the test kits are super expensive so I only have one to test the PH. It was pretty high Alkaline wise so I put the stuff in to add Acidity.

lol He generally is pretty big but if you look nicely you can see by his front fins that he's rounded than should be. Sorry, took it late last night on my phone.

I do think the feeding is part of it. but he is in a community tank and has been for many months without hassle. He tends to eat the other fish food as well as what we bought for him. We give them blood worm occasionally but havent had in about 2 weeks.

I havent noticed poop for anyone tbh. But Im not at home during the day to check very often.

Hi there, he is looking bloated to me, most likely not so much swim bladder as over fed - dont worry I have a little piggy in my community tank and for the next day or so he is in a breeding net to fast him.

Skip feeding him for at least a day or 2, then see if he will eat any daphnia. I found that has helped a lot with bloating since it helps the fish to poop. Other treatments if it is severe I have heard is Epsom Salt treatments (1-2tsp/gal). But Since I try to not treat everything with salt I found the best is to fast him and after 2 days give him some daphnia (its the only way I can get mine to eat the frozen ones - he is very fussy :p)

After that I feed once a day 2- 3 pellets of the Tetra Prima granules and once a week on a friday normally I fast him for the whole day. The next time I give him some daphnia and a bloodworm mixed in with the daphnia (he loves the daphnia then). Since Ive gotten my older boy on this schedule I havent had any problems with bloat.

Btw that is what I do for my single guy in his own tank. With my small community I fast all the fish once a week and then do the daphnia and bloodworms trick. I chop up a block of frozen daphnia, add half a block of bloodworms (also frozen), mix it well in a small cup and then I use an eye dropper to feed them. The boy alone in his tank gets 1ml of the mixture for dinner and in the community tank I give about 3 mls. The rest I just freeze again and use the next time round. To defrost I just use some of their tank water.

    Thanks for this !

The problem is that he is in a community tank and I dont have a breeding net. I will look into getting summen like it though.

I dont think it is overfeeding though coz he looks in a bad way n seems alil off balance.

Ok then do you have a small QT tank? If you do put him in that and maybe do the epsomsalt treatment. Otherwise find a small plastic container you can float in the community tank and treat him in that. Start with 1 teaspoon of epsomsalts per gallon (prepare this in a separate jar otherwise the salt might be to much for him.) (oh and this is us gallons - I have a friend from there who swears by this advice).
The main thing is to keep his temp steady no major fluctuations at all. Dont try the pea thing, Betta's in general hate peas :p Daphnia does the same thing as the peas and most love it. My girls love their daphnia.

OK, ek hoop jy verstaan in afrikaans.

As nog slegte gaan. Dalk miskien baie erg infection in die maag :bawling:

Thanks ! Im worried about moving himt hough. I dont want him to stress further. We had a recent power outage (oh Eskom /shakes head) and I think the drop in temp musta had an affect on him. It was off from about 7pm to 9am n the temp by us drops realy quickly n is pretty cold so I have no doubt it probably did damage.

Dankie ! Ons het n 30 L tank ook wat ek sal opstel as ek by die huis kom vandag maar ek is net bang dat dit sal hom nog laat stress.

    Thanks !

Hou die QT tank net donker, hy sal fine wees as julle hom skuif. Dis net makliker om hom op sy eie gesond te dokter as wat dit is met al die ander visse in die tank.
