    I am very keen on building a sump for my 200 liter aquarium - any tips and advice would be highly appreciated. I am aiming toward the emerged filter - water enters, passes through filter floss then trickles down bioballs and is pumped back to aquarium. King of Diy built one... I linked the video below. A friend highly recommended a overflow - For those who have a sump - do you have an overflow? also my tank has braces running all the way around the tank so not sure...

    @Mikayla....

    Sumps are great filters but firstly, if I may ask... what fish are you going to keep in your 200l?

    A 200l aquarium, is not very big and there are fantastic canisters that you can use.. ok.... depending on what your stocking ideas are

    If you still go with the sump idea...

    We have sumps in all our tanks... just normal sumps
    My son did try a trickle filter about 4 years ago but was not happy with its performance
    Also remember, in case of a power failure, with a trickle filter your media is likely to dry out and crash your whole system so I would caution against it
    Maybe someone else running a trickle filter can add their advice

    To run a sump, yes you need an overflow for the water to run from the tank into the sump
    There are several ways to build an overflow.. you can have the tank drilled (but get a professional to do it) and build the overflow that way, you can build a pvc overflow or you can buy a reef octopus overflow (they are a bit expensive)
    The cheapest way is to build a pvc overflow

    Braces around the tank are not a problem, you just make the bend a little longer

    I agree with @MariaS
    On a 200L tank, a canister filter is a better option.
    Most of the modern ones have a large media capacity, good turnover rates.
    And if there is a power failure, you don't have to worry about overflows etc.

    I keep fancy goldfish and they produce a lot of waste. Thought the design was pretty simple...
