    There

Just want to find out quickly if a 3ft tank(sump) will be big enough for 600L Peacock\ Hap tank? It will have 5 chambers, 3 for the media and 1 for inlet and on for outlet. The bottom half will be the sump and the top half will basically be there to prevent flooding in case the return pump doesn't work.

    The sump will have:

1st chamber - Water from Tank
2nd chamber - Plants or Filter Wool (still deciding)
    3rd chamber - Coarse Rocks
4th chamber - Finer Sand (thinking of pool filter sand)
    5th Chamber - Return Pump

If I decide on plants I will maybe put the plants in the 3rd chamber?

    Thank you...

Cul will see if I can get seachem here in poloks :-( doubt it cause its so hard just to get descent fish :-( I thought 3ft would be to small... Will see if I can't buy a 4ft in jhb and courier it or something :) for the 4th chamber, will pool filter sand work? I want to buy the sand to put it in my main tank but it comes in 50kg bags so I should have a crap load still left :)

Hi. A 3ft as a sump for your 600l would be fine. But bigger is always better. Haha. I would just use less chambers. Otherwise you will restrict flow too much and it will become clogged very quickly. 3 chambers will do the job just fine. 1st chamber you do your mechanical filtration, 2nd for bio. If you can't find matrix use ceramic rings. You will need allot more but works good too. And last chamber for your return pump and heaters.

Just make sure you keep an eye on that chambers water level as all evaporation will show here. Also make sure to add a powerhead or 2 to the tank to help circulation.

And lastly, is your tank drilled? And what's the footprint?

Ps. Nice size tank.. Post some pics. Always nice to see new systems being born.

Thanks for the info catfish :) think I will go for the 4ft with seachem, I'm going to have peacocks and haps so I'll rather overspend on filtration and safe on medication hahaYes and my biggest worrie is the return pump running dry but I'll cross the bridge when I get there haha yap I have a lot of powerheads from the marine tank that I have had :)Yes the tank will be drilled, going for a 50mm hole and then I will have a valve to adjust the flow, still deciding on a good return pum, any sugestions? Haha thanks but no pics for now :-( I've ordered the glass today so I will post pics as I go along :) but for now the tank will be 1300L x 700W x 650H, that's the inside measurement so I think it will be just under 600L but its pretty close :) hopefully the peacocks will be happy :)

    Morning Everyone

Ok so this is my plans.... I am going to convert a 3ft tank into a sump that I will use for my 600L Peacock\ Hap tank and later on swop it with a 4 ft tank\Sum. The tank will cycle for about a month and then will be understock for another few weeks so I think the 3ft should be good enough for now.

Then I will buy another 4ft tank and convert it into a sump and put that on my 600L tank.... I will take the 3ft sump and put it on my 4ft tank that I currently have for my Malawi's.... and all of that leaves me with a canister as spare\ backup

That should keep me busy for the next 3 months :)

Filter media will be as follows:

1st chamber is water from Tank
2nd Chamber is Seachem Matrix (2L should be enough)
3rd chamber is pool filter sand
4th Chamber is the return pump

The filter wool will be in the overflow in the main tank... the tank will be drilled so I thought of making a basket or something to put the wool in so it doesn't go through the hole or block it.....

Don't know if the order of the chambers is correct but any suggestions are welcome
