Hi, how regular do you recommend maintenance on a sump filter and what should be done during the maintenance?

    I have a 350 l tank and 100 l sump with 4 compartments.
I usually rinse out 1-2 compartments per month.

I'm running a 3ft sump on my 4ft tank. My normal cleaning is once a week the batting gets cleaned and bio media compartment gets cleaned about once a year. That is just to get rid of all died off bacteria

Agree with @Pierré Schoonraad , the batting/wool once a week with water changes.
The bio media, it also depends on what fish you have and how stocked your tank is
If you have very messy fish that produce loads of bioload you might need to do it every 6 months, if your fish don't then once a year would probably be ok

I change my batting once a month , however - my sump design is somewhat different from the std ones , the first mechanical chamber on my sumps is a 1/4 of the sump size and I stack it full full full , as for media , every 6 months I rinse them out , one doesn't want to get ammonia or bacteria spikes & blooms or any other problems

I haven't clean mine for a year and I even stopped doing water changes for a year, just topped it up as needed. But I've got almost no fish and I've got shrimps that cleans everything. They get stuck in my sump where they just loose there colour but they clean up the excessive dirt.

It all depend on your setup. Amount of fish, fish size and how regular you feed them. Snails, shrimps top, middle and bottom feeders?

If there is a snobby brown layer on the wool it should have done already.
If you get excessive algae growth it's signs that it should get cleaned up.
Plants in a tank usually shows you the first signs of imbalance in the tank but that doesn't happen overnight.

There is no precise formula to follow but use the theory on what to do and find a way that works for you. Everything takes time to learn to get the best of your tank.

One thing I've learned from keeping a tank. If you try to hard to get everything perfect you just chasing wind and getting no where. Try to find a perfect balance is they key to great tank.

Also very important - when you do get to clean your media - always use tank water never fresh water.
