Cant seem to find the the place where one would talk about filtration so ill post this here.

This is a bad sketch of what i have going. will post pics once i have my camera.

This kicks the hell out of the durso stand pipe. i got NO clue how, why people use them still.

you have to pipes coming out of your overflow box. the bottom one is your main one. connected to ball valve.

Ball valve is used to control water entering the pipe. this stops gurgling, etc. but the reason why ball valves are dodgy is cos Mr. Apple Snail could go for a walk and end up blocking the pipe which ends up in fish tank water all over your carpet, a burnt out pump in your sump and worse.

so mr apple snail gets stuck, water fills up in your overflow box. WALA! then the 2nd pipe at the top kicks in as soon as the water reaches it and then you have water going back into your sump. (it will gurgle like hell now! - good thing though atleast u will know something is wrong).

this is THE way of using a sump. you will have to balance the ball valve to make sure water the water level is right in the overflow box

    any question, ask away

cant seem to post pics without them being hosted on photobucket?

    welcome..

What do I do then where I have a corner overflow with two drilled holes in the bottom? Then your solution won't work ?

I thought of doing a durso on the one hole with a extra longer pipe on the other. If anything get stuck in the durso it will flow in the "open" pipe and warn me with the flushing sound. Think it's called the herbie overflow.

similar to mine if not the same? add the ball valve to your main pipe. i believe the gurgling comes from water and air been sucked in. so if u control it so only water goes through... well u wont hear a sound

also, has anyone ideas on how to silence an overflow box built in the tank, rather than hanging outside like in the weird pic? he holes are drilled horizontally, i.e. top to bottom i have three holes drilled into the back pane... the durso idea only works out on holes drilled in the bottom right?

Use a ball valve to limit flow, to the point of the overflow box level being slightly lower than the tank level

Nothing wrong with Durso, it works. Hofer Gurgle Buster is another option

Rubbish. I have a twin 50mm Durso 1.8 in my lounge. As long as you get the water levels right and throttling on the ball valves it will be pretty quiet

You need a ball valve no matter what overflow method you use. Water falling within a pipe is the same...

my tank does not have holes in the bottom/they are drilled into the back plate top. midlevel. and bottom. . the water level is just covering the second hole so i stuck a piece of tube in the top hole with the other end bent into the overflow chamber. only sound i have now is water falling down 15cm into the overflow chamber
