I just finished writing a looong post on my issues with my Penn Plax Cacade 300 Filter but I seemed to have placed it in the wrong catagory as its now apparently being reviewed by a moderator?

Due to the importance of getting my tank back up to full filtration i'm going to rewrite it and hopefully someone can advise me on the best filter to get as I will be going later today to get another one:

I was woken up at 1:30am yesterday morning with a vibrating noise coming from my Penn Plax Internal Filter http://www.petmountain.com/link_image/product/standard/519192.jpg . I returned to the LPS the next day and after demonstrating the noise they RELUCTANTLY replaced the unit. My relief, however, was short lived as the unit made the exact same vibration noise as the old one.

I've now decide this is due to an inferior product. I really just want something that is quite, I dont mind a slight hum but no vibration or grinding. I've had similar issues with my Elite http://www.theaquariumshop.com.au/images/full/Elite_Jet_Flow_Internal_Filter_100.jpg
which makes a hell of a noise too.

I really am over spending tons of cash on usless filters. I thought of trying those hang on types http://viriato.net/aquarium/20061229/DSC_7773.JPG and then just make sure my water level is high so it doesnt make to much of a splash but again dont want to waste money on it and then it turns out to be another dud.

So if anyone can please let me know of a very quiet filter (for a 103l tank that has a small elite 200l/hour filter in it too) that will do a good job and isnt too expensive i would REALLY appreciate it!

    Cheers, Lyle

I have 3 tanks (soon to be 4) in my bedroom and I'm using the Eheim Aquaball Internal Filters. I am a very light sleeper so I was concerned but they are super quiet and have not woken me up once. There is a VERY slight hum if you put your ear right at the filter. Take one step back and you hear nothing. I'm now addicted to them!
I managed to get them at a reduced price from a PTA shop.

Don't think you can ever go wrong if you buy a Eheim - ask some of the people that have been keeping fish for year - they still have their old Eheim runnig. They are more expensive, but worth every cent you pay for them.

Unfortunately we have to pay for the quality and in the end it is defiantly worth it

I would recommend the Dolphin internal powerhead - I think its the F800... I will check when I get home. Its serviced my tank for over a year with no real problems and very quiet. It comes with a sponge and a compartment for activated carbon - which I've since replaced with filter floss. Keeps my tank looking quite brilliant

I should add that I bought a second one of these recently for another tank, and that the impeller was making a noise, but took it back, switched it and all is well now.

Ditto also on the Dolphin. I have one in the tanks in the lounge and it's great and quiet! (But I still love my Eheim)

Dane I paid over R10 000 for my 2 eheims last year, they are indeed very very expensive but the quaility is exceptional.

I paid about R750 for the Eheim Aquaball in my 90cm tank and about R550 for the one in my 60cm tank. These are the submersable ones. Maybe you are referring to the external ones??

Woah! 10k! Hahaha, your tank is clearly in a different league!
The dolphin I have was just over R100. Maybe I'm thinking of the F200.

Eheim Aquaball without a doubt is your best bet...

you should not pay more than:
    2206 R450
    2208 R535
    2210 R710
    2212 R940

Thanks for the response... after checking out reviews I've seen that the Canister Filters come out as the quietest however upon phoning around the three that are available are:

    Fluvial Canister - R1800
    PennPlax Cascade Canister - R1200
    Tetra Canister - R1500

This is way more than I want to pay.... No one in Durban seems to stock Dolphins as those sound the best.

A number of reviews also said the aquaclear 300 and 500 hang-on filters were very reasonable and quiet as long as you keep your water level topped up.... anyone with experience on this make?

I bought a cheaper HOB from one of the new chinese importers and was disappointed with the noise from the impeller and the design was a bit dodge - Brand was SUNSUN.

I do have a Resun in my other tank which is uber quiet but its not adjustable and blasts the fish abit....

I might try get one of those, got quite a good rep with the LPS that stocks them so they may let me take it back if i'm not happy.

Unfortunately the Eheim Agency is not very good here in KZN so its looking like I'm gonna need to find alternatives

Slagter, you mentioned when I saw you something about filters that blast your fish to kingdom come and others that disperse the water better.. could you elaborate in a new thread the difference? Sounded interesting, but only caught half the conversation.

That's not a filter it is a water pump. Like a powerhead. But not. A powerhead has an impeller, while a pump like a seio pump has a PROPeller . The prop disperses the water better than the impeller.

The prop is just for water movement. It's not for filtration. Except in a marine tank where it forces water over your live rock, which is your filtration.

SEIOs are great. Got a bottom of the range one in my Discus tank and they aren't bothered by it
