Well, I have just come back from my LFS with the fish in the photo. It was £25, which I normally wouldn't have paid. But...I had a credit with them, so only paid £5

They had 2 species, this one and St aureum which the man told me aren't as robust, so I went with the panamense.

Big G, I hope you haven't gotten me hooked on collecting these :p

Sorry bud, but that does not look like St. Panamense to me? Can you get a clearer shot? Perhaps a close up of the head and mouth?

From that pic, it looks more like either Lamontichthys Sp. or Sturisomatichthys Sp.? But almost definately not Panamense.

Either way, its a nice find, and a stunner of a fish! I'm still jealous! ;)

    Regards
    G!

Ok, I'm leaning towards the Lamontichthys Sp. but need you to count the rays in the pectoral fins? Is there 6 or 7?

    Could well be.

As I said in another thread, these guys get stuff, sometimes they are totally clueless as to what the fish actually are.
I think I need to get a copy of the Baensch Catfish book you mentioned. This afternoon I am off to a lfs that I go to quite seldom, but they have a good range books, so I will see if I can pick up a copy.

I will try and take another photo of my fish later today, but here are some in the LFS tank.

See the thing that makes me think not Sturi's is that from those pics, it looks like there is virtually no nose or snout to speak of? This is a dead give away of Sturi's, and the suckermouth is kind of set back from this. From those pics, the suckermouth looks to be mounted right at the front of the snout which is more consistant with Lamontichthys sp.

    Regards
    G!

    Big G,

I was at the lfs yesterday but unfortunately they didn't have a copy of the book.
I am off on holiday tomorrow for 2 weeks, so I will have to investigate further when I get back.
This other shop had some Sturisoma, if I get a chance I will post a photo later, otherwise it will be in a few weeks.
