There is a strange white spot on my male guppys head. i have done some research and some say stress and others say ich but it isn't fury. I have taken him out and put him into my very small tank to keep an eye on him(Quarentine tank burst last week. how ironic). I tried to take photos but you cant see it that well. Has anybody else had this before? I have a 2foot tank with 5 4day old fry, 8 two week old fry, 4 5week old babies, male and female guppy and male and female swordtail. The 4 week old babies are going into the oscar tank in a week's time so i don't want to transfer ich if it is that.

    P.S
Vee the sword still hasn't given birth.

is it a flat spot, like the scales are white or somesuch, or does it look like it is a bump or something? has it appeared anywhere else on its body?

Steve Ich doesn't show up as being furry - it looks more like a little white pimples about the size of a pin prick when they first start out. Also with ich you'll see the fish rubbing themselves every now and again on anything they can, rocks, wood, plants and even the substrate.

You did well to move him to another tank just to be sure. :) Keep an eye on him for a few days and see whether you can see anything else going on. Also keep an eye on the fish left in his original tank just to make sure they aren't doing anything funny as well.

It's going to be very difficult to give any more info with the information we currently have. Perhaps you could tell us how he was acting before? Was he eating? Was he rubbing against things? Was he swimming normally or just lying at the surface or on the substrate?

PS: Have you got lots of floating plants in there or lots of other plants. I've seen swords hold on and hold on to their babies if there is no where for them to give birth safely, then as soon as you put a handful of guppy grass or the likes in the tank they suddenly drop all their babies. (Strange that they should care whether their babies have somewhere to hide considering they eat them as well - go figure?) :)

He was acting fine. He is eating, chasing the females and now and again try his luck with sword female. He only rubs himself were ever the female guppy is and its only on the bottom of his belly. Maybe it is a place that the female swordtail bit him to chase him?

PS: The tank is very planted and three quarters of the surface is covered with guppy grass. Maybe she is a little stressed out from the male guppy. Will just wait and see.

I was watching him now and he is rubbing himself up against every thing and another spot has shown up just next to the original one. The original one has now become like an indented lump if you understand what i mean. I haven't got anti ich med so is there any other way to help the poor guy out or is there nothing i can do.

K so now that i have established it is ich, what causes this? What have i done wrong for this to pop up now. I do water changes every week, clean the sand every wee, give frozen blood worms and i dont feed for one day.

When I cull the angels, I cut the head JUST before the gills, severing the spine and head in one go. Use a large SHARP knife !!!

Not a nice job, but I gotta do it..

Sorry to hear that Steve but luckily Ich can usually be safely treated, especially if you catch it in the early stages. Keep an eye on the other fish and if you see so much as ONE spot start treatment.
