    Hi guys

I am in the process of restocking my 2m tank.

i am going with a full malawi setup. i am curious as to how many malawis i can stock the tank with, considering adult size. i already purchased about 35 juveniles incl labs, zebra, peacocks, auratus, venustus, livingstoni, cobalt blue and some other species. i have kept malawis before on a smaller scale and was successful at keeping them.

the tank dimensions are 200x70x70 cm approx 980l.

    many thanks

    Hi there

I have a 1.8 metre tank and 51 malawis various species and 5 catfishes. Sofar so good just be careful for overstocking as the NO2 and NO3 levels must be monitored carefully and a 20-30% waterchange every week.

i would rather go with 50 or 60, these guys can hit 15cm quickly in a nice big tank like that. and they produce large amounts of waste.

    post pics!

    :)

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated, my plan is to get about 80 fish, the lil guys that are like 3cm, they still will be juveniles and wont exhibit much colour yet, ill let them grow out a little and choose the fish i want, form breeding pairs, some nice male peacocks etc and then sell the rest of.

Agreed! I tried putting some plants in my tank, and they were all totally destroyed by the next day. Only plastic plants for my Malawi tank from now on...

Plants are a nice treat for rift cichlids! Like giving candy to a baby... I often buy plants for them to munch on although nothing compares to the feeding frenzy that Cos lettuce puts them in.

    Hi Besh

Firstly, by no means a master or malawi purist... I just love these lively fish and feeding time is a blast when my "dogs" come begging...

I have a 1.8m 550L tank with 40 malawi's in it... It is a mixed tank in every way (mbuna, haps and peacocks and dietary requirements differ) and advice for me from breeders were to overstock but not to Over-do it... I will be raising my numbers to 50-60 max...

Furniture: sand and rocks with a 3d-polystyrne backdrop full of caves, nooks and cranny's for them to hide and play land lord... Some plastic plants have been added lately...

Feeding: I have been warned that feeding will be a challenge, but so far so good as they have grown on average 2-3cm in 3months. I do feed a variety of foods every day with 1 starve day per week...

Maintenance: water change 20-30% once a week, cleaning out canister pumps too... Check Ph and other bio's and viewing pleasure for next week - takes about 60mins to do...

Enjoy your tank, it is beautiful...

    Thanks for the help guys

@ Polla do you have any pics of your tank? Would love to see it, thank you for the very informative reply

Okay so today I popped by my supplier and to my amaze they had a few blue acara, no! not green terrors blue acara and they were selling unbelievably cheap, lol, it was always a fish I wanted to own so I had to take it, I haven’t come across these fish in Durban before, now I am aware that they cannot be mixed with Malawi’s but seen as though my guys are still very small I added the acara to the tank, been watching him the whole day and he seems to be doing fine
I am currently experimenting with the tolerance level of my fish and trying to get some different compatible tank mates if any probs arise as the mature then I will surely remove the acara

I also noticed they had gold saum(Aequidens` sp. "Goldsaum")(aka false green terror) cichlids in stock also amazing fish, didn’t buy it coz I thought I’d do some research first it seems that aren’t very common fish, the fish were still juveniles but some could already be identified as males by the hump developing on their heads, might pop back there tomorrow and grab a pair for another tank:nuts:

attached is an image of a gold saum (false green terror)
