My newly planted stem plants are growing white roots out of each knuckle in the stem at quite a fast rate! they almost more noticeable then the plant itself now. Is this normal at all or should I trim the roots? some are coming out horizontally at almost 6cm's now.

    Yup... normal.

You can actually cut and replant.

@ Zoom, Great hopefully thats means they doing ok. I wanted to ask is there a special way to cut the plants. I cut some plants that had bad algae on them in my smaller tank and I have noticed there has been no regrowth at all from where I cut them :(

SHARP scissors (Surgical grade are the best- so look out for some if you plan on staying with plants)

Cut just below the roots, and stick roots into substrate.

cut just above the plant node.

do you have a nutrient rich substrate? and how are your nitrates looking? these things will contribute to a plant shooting arial root.

@Lloydster I have fine white river sand substrate with flourish tabs in it and am dosing with excel and nutrifin plant grow. Are the aerial roots a bad or good sign?

    hi charlie

its not a bad sign at all but it does pull your eye away from the scape, some plants are prone to aerial shoots more than others, what plant is it?

also nutrifin plant gro is a micro mix you still need NPK to top up with. it has more then enough iron and some N but little K and P so your plants are not getting a stable diet. also only use root tabs with heavy root feeding plant like crypts, lillies and quadricostatus ect other wise rotala and the like prefer colum dosing over root tabs anyday!
