i've decided to start over with my tank since i made a lot of mistakes,i now only have 5 fish left from my 8,i think it's better that way,the temp use to be 28 C and i couldn't get it down but after a water change i got it right in the sweet spot (26 C),i have lost my angel fish,a guppy (had his fins eaten by the angel) and one of those fish that sit on the tanks glass,i am now left with my 2 catfish sharks,1 silver dollar,1 guppy and a fish that hides under my sunken boat,oh and also 3 snails.i have a corner bubble filter (sonic),and a rod heater.i have R1000 to spend on my tank this month so any ideas for upgrades.

P.S.soz for the rough description and speeling mistakes...

    Dash...
    1) Get rid of that sonic filter... get a decent internal filter, or a HOB filter. I cannot even begin to describe to you how much better they are. Even if you spend R300.00 on an internal, it'll be money well spent.
    2) Spend R100.00 on "Cycle" or "Stability" and put it into your tank as per the bottles instructions.

Keep the other R600.00 for a few beers, and cycle the tank... get that new filter going, keep the heater for now, although a Jager is a lot better long term.

I would say get the planted side going... but the silver dollar will not allow you to do that.

Yes... that's why I told you to buy "Nutrifin Cycle" or '"Seachem Stability". Both add beneficial bachteria to your filter... BUT that corner filter is mostly mechanical filtration, and little Biological filtration.

i'm thinking of having plants when i get my bigger tank, the silver dollar will have to live in my small tank fith plastic plants.

    @Dasher

If you going for the 2m tank. I wouldn't pay that amount of money for the tank. The second hand market for fish tank is crazy. DON'T be in a hurry to buy. I waited since December and I bought a 2m tank last month finally.

Rather wait and see what comes available in the next few days / weeks...

That just my advice.... I'm glad I waited

You could also look at the Microbe-Lift products. I believe that they are excellent. According to their documentation, you can add your fish as soon as you have filled your tank and it is up to temperature.
Another option is to get some gravel or filter media from an established tank. With the gravel, put it in some sort of filter bag or something similar and pop it in your tank. With the filter media, just put the media into your filter in addition to the new media.
How are you cycling your tank at the moment?

Also, Carp grow huge. Like, HUGE. And poo a lot. Rather avoid them.

As far as I know, water from a cycled tank doesn't help much. The 'good' bacteria you need are in the substrate and filter media.
I do stand to be correct though.

Hey Dasher, don't worry to much about gumtree. Doesn't matter where you shop online, there will be a scammer waiting for you. Just make sure to do a face to face meet and do COD only.

Thanks Linxie, now for a question about cycling:where in the biofilter should the activated carbon go?

    I have a normal Biofilter.
