starting new tank

im loking at starting up a new tank.as i have more time now i would like to improve on old setup
been using shells mixed with crushed ones.have a number of rocks
looking at a 250L setup

what i would like to know is what are the tried and tested equipment
sand
heater H2O Aqua
power head using Atlas
external filter currently using Aqua Clear

the fish im looking to keep Frontosa or Petrotilapia Chitimba depending on availability

All I can say is forget about long term keeping of a colony of Frontosa in a 4 foot..... way too small mate. Aim for a 5 footer minimum.... What size Aquaclear you have there? Hope it's a big one...

River sand is always a good option, if you want to go planted ADA aquasoil

 

Go for a mix of Pool Filter Sand....and some crushed corral to buffer your water for Rift valley cichlids.....
