    Hi All

    I trust you are well.

I always see pics of sumps which have some sort of sponge in the first chambers of the sump which serve as the mechanical filtration. I looked around and found a few LFS's that sell similar sponge. These have always proven to be extremely expensive.

I have seen sponge at Metro Home Centre. Does anyone know if these are safe to use in a tank? Or are they laced with any chemicals which can be toxic to fish?

Or does anyone know where I can buy sponge which is safe to use as mechanical filtration?

    Thanks!

    Hi @norman777

We running several sumps and internal filters and yes.. getting from the LFS would kill me

We go to material shop, we usually go to Chamdor materials in Edenvale or Hubby Hyper in Alberton and buy batting/sponge per meter
It usually costs under R200 for 10m long by 2.5m wide piece
I cut this up in squares the size of the sump compartment and put 4 layers
As the top layer gets really dirty, just take it off and either wash or discard
I usually just throw it away because mine gets really badly dirty with the pancakes and it works out so cheap like this, that its not even worth washing sometimes

@MariaS is spot on, use and throw away. As soon as you touch a bottom sponge in a sump the dirt goes everywhere and onto your bio media. I just use filter floss now and throw away the top layers as it gunks up. The floss underneath stays clean for very long. The nice thing about floss is that the dirt sticks to it and don't waft everywhere. I have a bottom sponge left in one of the sumps but that will also be replaced with floss with the next clean up.

Thanks for your replies guys. The tips on the number of layers really help as I always try to rinse all of them and then some detritus gets stuck between the media.

@MariaS the batting/ sponge that you buy, is it the same as the ones the LFS normally supply as well? The white one? Dont have a pic now. Will post one later.

tried most options from filter socks that block up and overflow in a day, to crazy expensive matalla (excuse spelling) foam. witch works great just dam expensive.
the batting from chamdor works out the cheapest and quickest. Normally find pet shops sell thinner but more ridged form of batting, i use the thicker more fluffy stuff now cause it is easier to find and still works quite well.

@norman777 , you know the batting that comes per meter and is 2.5m wide that they use to fill duvets..quilts and all sorts of things?

It comes as a roll per meter whilst the LFS usually sells it in packets and it looks almost lie cotton wool when you take it out the packet
I will also post pictures for you tonight
