So I want to try use spawning mops for my guppies, instead of plants.
    Is anyone else doing this?

Thinking of using polystyrene to keep them afloat, is polystyrene fish safe?

    Thanks in advance

Guppies are live breeders they do not spawn.

Yeah polystyrene that is untreated is safe.

Yep, know that, but looks like great hiding places for the fry.

Ah ... while the ideal is to have fish in the tank that do not eat the guppies. Seems to me like a good endler cross also takes that out of the fancy guppy behaviour.

What else do you have in your tank.

Remember that plants help to create the balanced system - so just going synthetic is not always the best idea.

I have a +/- 1400l goldfish pond. On 16 January I bought 5 female and 3 male guppy's and put them in. Since then they are breeding like crazy. I have more than 20 fry of various sizes in a tank that I scooped out of the pond, fearing that they might be eaten. However, there are now so many fry in the pond, swimming out in the open, and the goldies don't seem to mind them, I stopped saving them and just let nature take its course. Will probably have to reduce their numbers soon.

When the temp drops to 15 you will see they get slow, by 12 only the really hardy are still alive ... hit 10 for a few days and you will probably have none left.

When I bought them at the LFS they said they are just as hardy as goldfish. So you reckon they wont survive a Pretoria winter?

They may be as hardy as goldfish, but there is a critical difference.
The goldfish is a cold water fish, while the guppies are tropical warm water fish.

Ive recently made afew breeding mops and tried them with my guppy breeders. Seem to work really well. The females seem to go in, drop the fry, take a break before heading back out.

I used these homemade breeding box with a little mop at one corner. I find the females tend to give birth near the mop.
