Hello all, I have a question. A lot of people on this site seem to be breeding for non-commercial purposes. I was wondering what you do with the fry? Do the LFS's take them? If they do, what kind of price do they offer, because I've been reading some threads about horrendous markups. Also, what is the usual procedure? How many of you manage to find homes on this website? I would suppose that you could make more money here than selling to LFS's...

    Cheers, Gabriel

It all depends what type of fish you are breeding, if it is something like guppies you won't get too much for them. Most hobbyist sell to their LFS and the price would generally be at around half the retail price. The problem with selling directly is that yes you do make more money, but the demand is not as great so where do you keep all your fry while trying to find homes for them. Get to know your LFS and build a good relationship with them, it'll make it far easier to get rid of your excess fish when you need to.

I have recently started a little 3ft tank, and suddenly, within a week of getting the livestock, one of my guppies popped about 10 fry. I have a breeding box for them, but would it be more advisable to keep them in a smaller tank on their own, otherwise, how long would I need to keep them in the box before letting them out with the bigger fishy's?

Hi SVFighter please go to the new users section and introduce yourself to the group.

    And to answer your question:

You should separate the fry from the parents to a tank where there is no adults. The adults give off some sort of “growth-inhibiting hormone” that stunts the growth of the fry.

    I read this somewhere

Gaawie i found that the pet store I spend the most money at are usually the ones that will help you out. Or the one where the owner himself work with the customers.

I like to keep small Cory Catfish and when they grow up trade them for small ones again. Have small tanks so I need to keep the fish small:p

I actually went to my local LFS and asked him what I should breed that he would purchase back from me...

he asked for a couple things and I chose one species I prefered.

Gaawie, if you have a good relationship with your LPS owner, they are sometimes helpful in that they will give you either (1) a semi-decent monetary value for you fish, or (2) discounts on other products. Some stored will give you free food etc.
