    Hi guys

I have promised to post this for a week now, sorry for the delay.

The below was set by SANS, and monitored by various committee's eg: SAGGA and AAAMSA.

Various changes will occur, I have been saying 5 years, just consulted with my father he says in the next 2 years. A government body called, NRCS (national regulator for compulsory specifications), will take over and enforce these regulations.

I mentioned that it was illegal to use toughened glass, i was incorrect it is not recommended. when speaking to my dad he thinks that this could change to being enforced. the whole sans 17 document will be under review, to make sure that it is implementing the right specifications. Fish tanks are considered one of the more dangerous pieces of furniture so it doesn't look like they will be making anything less but more!

Feel Free to ask any questions you guys might have. :)

I hope they can enforce these regulations.I've had some dealings with AAAMSA and they are pretty poor at best when comes to the enforcing part.

Yea they have been put aside and the government will, it makes money for them and apparently the NRCS is quite powerful in this country!

Do we assume that frameless means no bracing? Punched the numbers into Calculate Aquarium Glass Thickness | Aquarium Tools looks like they are on a safety factor from 4.x all the way to 6 ... maybe they are expecting the quality of the glass we us to decrease in the future?

Love the idea of no more 3mm tanks .. but officer it is for my spider ;-)

Is there a table for bigger tanks than 2000mm?

Nice to have standards but enforcement will be another story
I wonder who they consulted for the fishtanks?

Yes do seem a bit haphazard regarding a uniform calculation. They MUST have a additional set of rules for "braced" / "euro plated" / "Kick plated" aquariums as well, to ensure a complete set of rules.

I for one are getting tired of seeing large aquariums built to a hight of 750mm out of 10mm glass!!! It should be murder not manslaughter if someone die from a burst aquarium that was built out of to thin glass.

@Moolis You would know if they consulted SAPTA or someone in the fishkeeping business. Does not look like it since they dont mention bracing etc as they talk about frameless only

As far as I know = No consultations
But it could have been done through the guy, that know a guy, that know a guy that is building aquariums in his garage ;)

But this table as it is now, do not make sense to me (to many discrepancy's)

Hi guys will answer these questions in depth tonight, but @Moolis the whole document was found to have discrepancy's however not too many were found in the aquarium department in their meeting.

I will pass the queries on and answer them accordingly!

    Hi Guys,

I'm pretty sure SABS will welcome any participation of any institution w.r.t. to developing and reviewing of SANS. It is always a struggle to get representatives to serve on SABS's TC (technical committee).

If you guys feel that you can add any value in participating, then you need to contact SABS via an institution like SAPTA or the like and request to SAPTA or the like to be represented at the TC (technical committee) under which SANS 17 resides.

@wrenchy, just be careful about the copyrights.
