You do need a permit to collect indigenous plants... I think it is R50 at the post office. Other than that, you can go wild. There are a few people that I know of who collect from local sources.

Good luck. Post some pics afterwards!!

It should be legal to keep them, if anyone knows different please say so(Henk) but most of the plants you find are alien or dont like the warmer conditions we keep our tropical tanks at.

Carl, please take lots of pic's of to document each plant and of the surrounding plants, some can adapt to aquatic growth..

This is a topic that is very interesting to me and if you can find anything new I will send you your pick of the plants I have as a reward :) (check out the thread of my 1.2m )

To answer your question yes, I have many indigenous plants in my tank, with verying degrees of success.. Identification is very difficult, I can do it up untill the genus and then we can ask a botanist or prof Dirk..

    Regards,
    Phil..

we will be taking along a under water camera and we will be doing a night dive to see if wee can find any fresh water eels,

phil, can u maybe take pics of your SA plants and post it so that i can go look for them,

is there a book available thats readely available of the shelves?

maybe i should convert my 1.2 into a not heated freshwater homebred fish and plants tank if i can obtain permits

You need a permit from DEAT, the local nature body (in the cape its CapeNature) etc to collect. the post office permit is a fishing permit/bait collection permit

ok theres a posibility that u can remove plants from the wild without a permit aslong as its not protected and that u dont move it to another water catchment area,

now i will be diving within the mooiriver water catcment area so the plants will stay within the area, but still strugling with deat will keep u posted.
