    Hey guys.

    Been years since I've posted.

I wanted to create something in my office that would start a conversation.

I decided to buy big vases as a "big" beta tank while growing bulbs (tulips) with aquaponics/hydroponics.

So I made the following. Could not find tulip bulbs so used gladiolas (I have a feeling it's going to be too big but it was cheap)

The plan is for the roots to go down into the bowl over time.

I may add a female Beta or 2 overtime but that depends on aggression.

Looks really cool! Only question is how do your bettas get surface air?

The fiber is actually very open/porous and I see the water evaporates fast were its standing now. They even started building bubble nests for some reason.

That's a very cute idea! I like it! I think tulips aren't in season yet, so maybe when they are you can get them and try that look.
Bettas are labrynth fish so they do need direct access to surface air, but maybe you want to just look that up in case I'm wrong since I'm also not overly clued up yet on fishes needs entirely

Not a problem. I can just drop the water level. As long as the middle part touches water it soaks it up with the clay balls and Swedish moss (I think its called) I used.

That leaves direct air pockets all around the outer diameter.

I'm sure that would work perfectly then!
It's going to look so pretty when it grows!

    @Franna

    Cool idea.

IMO though not sure gladioli the best choice for this project.
Glads like full sun. And they also get tall and the flowers quite bulky. If they don't have enough substrate to root in to, they may fall over?
Some type of fern might work quite well.

Mayne you could try lucky bamboo if the gladiolus doesn't work out. Then you could put them straight into the vase if you can find any tall enough for that vase

Must admit I also think the gladioli will be too overhead heavy
    Lucky bamboo looks very nice

it might look small on the photo but it's not. Spend a lot of time and money looking for a big vase. and because it's round it has a magnifying effect and it makes the beta look huge.
