Thanks. I had so many tanks, I wish I had taken pics of all of them. Luckily I have video footage, but not all of it is good!

Sciaenochromis fryeri, I used to breed stacks!
A short video of one of my young Electric Blue Haps spawning, it was their first time, she held to term, +- 30 fry. See how small she is in comparison to her sibling/mate?

I also used to breed Otopharynx lithobates.

Nobody commented on the Red Tilapia?!!!

I'm sure all the Malawi cichlid enthusiasts on the forum are familiar with 'Marmalade Cats''. For non-mbuna freaks, these are a blotched version of Labeotropheus fuelleborni that were rare and highly sought after back in the day. My favourite were the pink ones.
I also used to breed stacks!

I have many sub-standard cellphone pics like the one above, hopefully you'll watch this video link to appreciate them...

@EnvironmentalBro: I watched and enjoyed you malawi tank video, but I was a bit saddened that you got guilted out of keeping your clown loaches with your malawis by the 'purists'. I've always kept Clowns with my malawis for a number of reasons that l won't go into now. The Scats with malawis? No real reason other that I love them and l can!

It sounds like you have tons of experience in fish keeping! Thanks for watching the video :) Scats??? The clowns were interesting and actually most peoples favorite of all my species! After awhile I did find that they looked out of place and detracted from the whole notion of a biotope so they had to go... Anyway I am currently very happy with my Tangs which are not as colourful as my Malawis but are extremely entertaining to watch. When Telkom decides to fix my internet I will post another vid.

I love tangs, had a school of Cyprichromis a few years ago, (the only true schooling cichlid I've ever had the privilege of owning) but I lost the whole batch of seventeen. I probably will not be able to ever forgive myself for losing them! I hope to someday rekindle my love affair with tangs, but for now I'm content with what i have...

I also tried some Lake Victorian haps in the form of Astatotilapia latifasciata, at least that what they were called a few years back, with tremendous success. Very hardy, not fussy & eager breeder. Had fun with those!
    Astatot lati-001.jpg Astatot lati-002.jpg

I got them from a good friend, who, like me, breeds fish purely for the love of it, never profit!

Ya I also lost most of my Malawis because of an ignorant mistake last year... I only recovered from the experience In December 2012 but I guess we learn the hard way sometimes! Those Victorians are fantastic fish

Yes, cichlids have a lot going for them. Once you've kept them, you always go back! I havn't been to a decent lfs recently, so l'm not sure what's available these days. I'd love to try featherfins...

Part of the aquaponics project was growing duckweed in tubs.

    May21 (16).jpg

Another part of the project was to put a betta in each tub to eradicate mosquito larvae.
Impractical to buy so many bettas, so I bred them like this:

Not pretty like some of our forum member's expensive imports, but they got the job done!

Hey man cool fish, that blue one in the 3d pic looks redonkulous.

Where did you find the red strain tilapia? Where the T.mossambicus?
And what did you do in winter to keep the water temp up?
I heard the only reason they made the red variety was to make it more appealing to the market as it looked more like sea fish, like red roman.

I have a orange blocth female. They are stunning fish. Its just a pity the price increase on marmalade cats and orange blotch goes up compared to the "normal colour phase's".

Hi @lep2soma i thought for a second there, that you where spawning your bettas in the tubs...but then checked out your clip. Interresting enough in Thailand they actually spawn thier Bettas in tubs like that.

Problem is that the water in those tubs will get to cold @ night and your Bettas will probaly die of some disease like white spot. Unless the tubs is in a warm spot in a room? Or did you succeed in your spawn and keeping the bettas in the tubs outside?

    Would be nice to know?

@Good_Times: the Red Tilapia mossambicus were from Nick James' Rivendell Hatchery near Grahamstown. I used reticulated black polycore piping on a black metal base mounted on the roof above the tilapia pool to keep temperatures up. The red variety of tilapia are stunning! They have pearl scales, and wouldn't look out of place in a large Central American setup. They also taste really good, but you have to purge them first, and then fillet. Check the videos Tigger & the Red Tilapia where juvie reds are starting to display their colours.

2Shakes: They are really easy to breed, Labeotropheus. You should definitely get a male, even if he's not blotched.

@Hennie: Because Tzaneen doesn't have severe winters I only had to house the bettas indoors for a few weeks, during which they would spawn.

And how is your fry doing? And does your bettas survive in those tubs then?

I come there for work sometimes....not my favorite place...haha, sorry!

It's who you know in a particular place that makes it or breaks it!
I've abandoned the 'Tzaneen Urban Aquaponix" project because I had to relocate to Jhb. Promotion. Was loads of fun while it lasted, though.

That sounds interresting, any pics, so at what temp could you maintain the water?
I see here the nights gets pretty cold, but the days stay mild.
