Ok, after hours and hours on this forum and youtube i have started my 2.4m tank build. I thought i was going big but the hours and hours on this forum showed me a 2.4m tank is not big. Big respect to most of you. I found allot of inspiration for my project here. I will be documenting my build so here it goes. I came across 3 tables at a scrap yard for almost free. They are very sturdy
It was quite a hassle to align the 3 tables but the price justified it all. 2301784d4f74489b63d92644bc5fb87e.jpg

The plans are 2.4m length, 500mm high and 610mm width. This is a budget build so i designed the tank around the glass I could source cheap.

Well... nice to see some nice big tanks going up

    Congratulations!
Are you having the tank drilled for the sump?

Hope you are going floating base ... hard to see what the idea is with the poly and the 2 sheets of glass they look like the same size - so going to keep an eye on the thread.

What height and width you going with. Seems like you will probably end up with a thousand litre tank.
With three separate stands - please just make sure that the tank is TOTALLY level and that all three stands share the weight equally.
For that size tank you will need a standard 4ft sump with three chambers - and probably a 5000 lph pump I would imagine.
Are you drilling the tank for the overflow? Drilling makes it just so much easier and you never have to worry about if the electricity goes off or you lose the siphon etc. It is easy so to make your own Durso type overflow.

@B@kkies... sorry.. the more I look at this build.. the more worried I am about the three tables
Is there no way you can maybe weld a steel bar across, joining the three to stop any movement?

If it was me.. I would really worry that any bump or accident slightly moves one table and something goes wrong
Even when you clean the glass or scrub algae off it, you have no idea the power in the movement of the water
Also, have you checked that there is enough space for the sump and to be able to work on it?
As I said.. this is just me....

As for the base.. I also support the floating base build but I guess that is up to each person..

Totally agree with @MariaS join those tables together weld a couple of flat steel bars joining them all... Lots of extensive planning needed for such a big build. Hope you will also brace the tank. Good luck bud

Hi. Yes it is aligned very precisely. I have braced with 50 x50 mm angle iron it at the back to prevent the separate stands moving.

@hviviers yes. The bracing is planned. I will post i pic of the glass still to be assembled tonight. Im itching to go home and continue building the tank. Ive decided against drilling
If i drill it will be the side panel and that will look worse than an overflow pipe system. Do you have alternatives

@MariaS and @eros111 im scared of drilling. I have a drill bit but i do not want to drill the back panel in fear of weakening it. It is 8mm glass 500mm high with propper braces. So it leaves me with the side panels and that would make it look horrible pipes sitting on the side of the panels

Now this is the part that scares me. My 4ft is done in 8mm with bracing top and bottom. This tank is double in size. IMO it should have been nothing less than 12mm with bracing.

That is why the maks height is 500mm. I did and redid the calcs and is happy. The overflow will even reduce the height. My tank is not much higher than your tank. The big issue is height. My base is 16mm.

Wow... ok.... but gee.. you brave.....
    My 2c

The drilling for sump is usually done on the bottom panel, not the sides.. but its your call.. I understand you being scared to do it.
Sumps on drilled tanks I have found to be much quieter and a pleasure ...

Now one thing that worries me a bit...God you are very brave.... 2.4m.... with 8mm glass? eish.... I couldn't do it.... ok... its only 500 high but still... I just couldn't do it...
There is so much that can happen inside or out of the tank not to mention water movement/displacement by fish if you going big fish or yourself cleaning.. remember you will have at least 1 ton of water...
I guess you have the glass already so its probably too late so at least brace that tank along all the joins, bottom, top, and along all sides and obviously the top
