Hi

What type of snail do we eat in the spur?? I heard a story that it is an apple snail

 

Escargot the French for edible snail or petit gris in cuisine..refers to

Helix aspersa, although sometimes H pomatida are on restaurant menus locally.

H aspersa is naturalised in SA...harvested from vineyards and orchards mostly in the Western and Eastern Cape.
The region's climate best matches it's native Mediterranean habitat.
OOPS! So it was brought with by well meaning escargot lovers, and some accidentally in soil accompanying plant material centuries ago...and in winecasks

I remember having to dissect them at school AND University zoology laboratories ..yeeeuuuccch!

Most restaurants purchase CANNED snails..nothing wrong with asking ANY Spur to check their packaging.

At least 100 species are edible by human culinary standards..
The common, or garden snail is edible, but a bit taai..or chewy...hehe
Incidentally the same species mentioned above

Hardly likely that it's Pomaceae spp. or Apple snails!!
Those originally introduced in countries as a protein source for humans, failed miserably..either becomeing a pest to valuable crops eg. taro and rice
OR playing host to a nasty set of parasite which affects humans...BADLY

So, unless the Spur was near Veracruz,Mexico, it's not likely Apple snails would be on the menu
