    Gents,

    As the documents posted here Rules and Regulations still stand as law. No other National lists has been passed by DAFF in terms of the Bio Diversity act of 2004. I also think some of the members needs to differentiate between aquaculture and keeping fish at home. Aquaculture is a highly regulated industry with permits etc. The exports one the members posted a link to is for aquaculture. Once any new lists becomes available it will be posted by either myself or any of the SAPTA members.

    If you do want to keep/breed blacklisted species feel free to apply for the permits and do the EIA just like any other aquaculture farm.

    It seems the 6 monthly cycle of "i want to keep black listed species" and bashing of DAFF has started on TASA again.

    @Henk Hugo - If a plant is on the BL (I think one of my recent additions bought from LFS) and it's in your tank, are you open for prosecution?

    Ok, and seeing as snails/molluscs do NOT appear on those documents I deem it fine to discuss them on the open forum, thank you for the clarification. Do you have a link to the official blacklist maintained by DAFF? I can not find it on their website. Thank You.

    Thank you @Henk Hugo.
    The issue here is not about people wanting to keep BL species. The issue is we on TASA moderate snail threads and treat snails as BL species, when according to your confirmation above, we can deduce the snails are NOT blacklisted, as they do not appear on this list.

    @MarcHawke
    I will respond to your query, however this is totally off topic, and as BL threads always land up turning nasty, the moderators are keeping a close eye on this thread to ensure it stays on topic.

    Common agreement on this forum is that if you have a blacklisted plant in your tank... it is YOUR responsibility. Whilst I cannot tell you what to do with it, we would always recommend you to dump it on your next braai. The plant is BL for a reason. We will also not allow you to trade, sell, or request any BL plants on TASA.

    Please can we try and keep this thread ON TOPIC. This thread is about finding out of snails should be treated as BL species or not according to the SOUTH AFRICAN LAW. This thread is not about the fact that we closed previous snail threads, nor about running any Dept. down, or questioning the Blacklist.

    Dean you will have to call plant and animal health in PTA and request that they send you a copy. There is no "maintained" lists - they get updated every 15 to 20 years or so. You will see the requirements for snails on the plant lists posted as well as in the various acts governing aquaculture, biodiversity and lastly it seems they are trying to implement the Marine Living Resources act on FW aquaculture.

    This is why we assumes snails were banned. However these requirements are not a SA thing. And granted the assumption that you need a phytosanitary certificate to import plants can thus mean snails are Blacklisted... we can't ignore the fact that they are not on the current species blacklist. Surely if snails were blacklisted the current list would list Moluscs SPP?

    Ok, so it appears nobody can provide evidence that snails are blacklisted, they are not on the blacklist that has been provided to us, therefore members may feel free to discuss snails on the open forum. Thank You. Thread closed.
