hi all so just want to ask what everyone uses to get rid those lil common pond snails that come in with plants? i bought some snail kill from daro, moved my apple snail out to the fry tank and put the stuff in 2 drops for two days and ..... i stil got the snails  they eating my plants and here i thought it was my apple. i gave it an extra day and redosed before i came home so ill see if its worked wen i get back on sunday but somehow i dont think so. im reluctant to dose again cos its got copper sulphate in it and too much of that cant be good for my fish. :wondering:

on a happier note my guppies had fry again and i managed to get the really nice female into the fry tank before she had too many so now i got lots of lil ones yay . i was wondering does anyone know how long it takes for the fry to reach breeding maturity? i got 7 that are a few months old, they getting their pretty colours and i think i may have 2 males and at least 4 of the others are from my lyretail male as they getting the neon body colours he had yeeeep:p

Sink a small slice of cucumber in your tank and leave it overnight - in the morning the cucumber should be covered in snails. Remove the piece and repeat until you have no snails.

I prefer this method because is poses no risk to your fish, with regards to chemicals or unsuitable tankmates (such as puffers).

Agree with Salmon. Using a piece of Cucumber is the ultimate solution that is safe and bound to work.

You've got guppies, so a puffer is a definite no.

    Hi Windfire,

A word of advice is that you should not use copper sulphate in your aquarium, I do not know why this stuff is still sold as an aquarium remedy as it belongs to the aquarium museum shelf or rather the graveyard. It causes all sorts of side effects such as fish sterility and intoxicates your plants so get yourself a good snail killer if you have to use one, but this copper sulphate is just going to cause all sorts of additional problems.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

or a clown loach...i am trying my best to get a ramshorn population established in my main tank, hoping that eventually there will be too many snails for the clowns to keep up, but alas, they last no more than a day. I also have a guppy tank with tons of ramshorns and every day or two i add about 10 to 20 from there to my main display and i never see them again...

@Laure: Why would you want to establish a ramshorn population? Are they beneficial in some way?

No Ferry - they actually keep the substrate stirred up and prevents it from going anerobic

I've seen with my own eyes that ramshorn snails are probably the best algae control you can find, if you can establish a big enough population. They don't eat all types, but diatoms and soft greens will never survive with a decent ramshorn population. And those types are the most common types and often unavoidable. So if you don't mind the snails then at least you wont have algae. They also eat dying plant leaves and other tank waste so in general they are really good at keeping the tank clean.

Henk you are referring to trumpet snails. Ramshorn stay above the substrate at all times.

Ramshorn snails dont aerate substrate, only the malaysian trumpet snails do.

can you ever get the copper out the tank? Doesnt it soak into the silicon? i have seen tanks that have been treated with it and their seals are bright blue :p

Next time go for a more natural solution. Zebra Loaches/Botia Striata work wonders in eliminating snails of all kinds. From pond snails to MTS to Ramshorns to even Apple snails double their size
