    hey all

i am looking for a small HOB filter for my 2ft Endler tank, that i got running last night, had a look at the 3ft (with two HOB filters) and wow, the water is clear!!

now the Q is, where to get them, @ a good price, and what make to choose? as i have seen about 3-4 types.

AquaClear 30 is the best. bit more expensive, but worth the money.

@Vez - I am going to start sounding like a broken record but you might want to look at a HMF .... perfect for breading tanks I think.

If you do go HOB - remember to add a nice big peace of open-celled sponge on the intake.

A bit of a debate I suppose - an HOB without a sponge on the intake has the potential to be both mechanical and biological - but we tend to run the HOB at full capacity so I suspect that the amount of media causes it to be more mechanical than biological.

The HMF is a good biological filter with low maintenance - 6 or more months to years - but it has little to no mechanical filtration.

So here is my take on it - no proof but gut - HOB + well planted tank and regular filter maintenance is workable. HOB and nothing to do biological could lead to more regular maintenance i.e. Water changes and the like.

HMF once mature is should be able to handle all your biological requirements - so it is great for bare bottom tanks.

Hope this helps - read more on the web before you decide.
