Species? Tank depth + size? Lighting(wattage, colour spectrum, how old are they)? fertilization regime? Bio carbon availability? how long has plants been established? Are they Root plants or Stems? Light period? type of substrate?

From these questions you can see that there are a myriad reasons for your problem - if you cant answer the more technical ones - just post a pic of said plants and we'll be better able to help out....

I take it that you mean an Amazon Sword plant of the Echinodorus Genus? Without getting to technical about your lighting,i think the problem is as I just explained to Razer...

Most plants you find in LFS's have been grown in emersed, hydroponic conditions - Faster growth, better shipping survival rate and no aquatic snails to worry about... the emersed leaf form of most plantsare vastly different from the submerged form - emersed leaves will die off when the plant is submerged and new, underwater leaf forms are grown...

Also - remove them from those little "bakkies" they come in - plant directly in substrate, but not too deep - part of the crown MUST stick out of gravel - otherwise plant will rot..
Amazon Swords are rather heavy feeders, consider giving it a root tab for this purpose...

It could be a transition phase like @azurekoi said or it could be a mineral deficiancy, it might even be a nitrate shortage or a hord of other things. Post some pics of the plants and close ups of the leaves. That way we can see what's wrong and advise

@dylan woodhouse - Dude, can I ask you a favour? Been looking at some of your other posts and it seems that this is just the way you communicate on TASA,but can you please elaborate about the specific problem you are seeking advice over...

I realise some of the questions I asked earlier, you might not know much about, but ask then and we'll help.... We come closer to solving your plant problems and you learn a bit more about the hobby. And as Double D said...Photies speak a million words - will tell us lots more than the info you gave...
You never took the time to answer what substrate you have, nor how long your lights are on for... or how old your lights are...

Without giving info you are asking: "How long is a piece of string?" - You will get a thousand answers, none of them exact....

Oy he's probably just a kid like me. It takes a while to get used to the strict people around here so just bear with him, and me.

Oh and @dylan woodhouse, listen to these guys.

Dylan post a pic of your full tank with the lights on and without using the flash of your camera.

I get the idea the problem might be your lighting for some reason.

Hey Dylan. If you "mention" someone in a post, you type @, and then there username right after it without a space after the @.

    Like this: @dylan woodhouse

Rep power is the amount of rep points you get if that user adds to your rep (reputation). It's done by clicking the star in the post sidebar. My rep power is 2 so when I add to your rep, you get 2 points. Isn't that correct, @Vis?

    Hey Dylan

i think there are various reasons why your plants seem to be melting. One of the reasons, is that you are not dosing any fertilizers into your tank. Plants need nutrients in order to thrive. Just like any other type of plant and animal. There are a whole bunch of things that could cause this to happen and I will briefly explain the principles of the planted tank...

Firstly, there are 3 major needs in your aquarium for plants to thrive.

1 - Light - All plants need light to Photosynthesize. The amount of light you have above your tank, will control the amount of growth in your tank. More light means that the plants can uptake nutrients quicker, and thus the growth of the plants will be quicker too. There are many lighting options available to you. T8 tubes, T5 tubes, PL tubes, Compact Florescent, Metal Halide and LED. Personally, I think that most tanks will do well with T5 lighting. T5 provides good plant growth spectrum light. Plants like the light spectrum of between 6500 kelvin to 8000 Kelvin. These ranges provide the best growth in plants.

What light bulbs have you got above your tank? How many light bulbs do you have above your tank?

2 - Fertilizer. There are 3 Macro Nutrients that your plants need. NPK - Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. You will also need trace elements to keep your plants healthy. You can get these things from most Local Fish stores. Depending on the amount of plant mass you have in your tank, will depend on the amount of fertilizers you dose to the tank. There are a bunch of Fertilizer brands, like ADA, Seachem, Brightwells, Kent, Microbe Lift, etc. You can pick and choose to your hearts content.

3 - Carbon Dioxide - or Co2. This is the building block of the planted aquarium. The Co2 is what the plants use to photosynthesize. I am not going to go into the whole theory of it, but it is the most important element of the whole process. Land plants get their Co2 from the atmosphere, water plants get their Co2 from the dissolved content n the water. The only way we can add dissolved Co2 into a closed water system, is to put it there. You can either run with pressurized Co2 through a diffuser, or you can make DIY co2 using the sugar and yeast method. Then there is the fairly controversial method of using Seachem Excel. Or some other liquid form of adding carbon to your tank. The product works. Millions of bottles are sold every year, so it must work.

So now you know what the plants need, can you more accurately describe your setup and your maintenance regime to us? It really will help us to guide and advise you on how to keep your plants alive.

    Regards

    Sean
