So ive had my little guy for just under a year now and he seems to have a very docile nature.. doesnt do much swiming.. i noticed his always resting on the filter and between plants (mostly around the filter) and seems to lay like shown in the picture below.. is this natural behavior?20180401_095730.jpg

As far as I know it is normal behaviour for a Betta. Their natural habitat is slow moving or standing water. What I noticed, through my own experiance with Bettas, is that the bigger the fins the more lethargic the fish.

Mine also gets "tired" and find it in one of its usual resting spots.

Thats the problem with bettas, you want them to have bigger fins but they then get too tired to swim. As long as they are getting enough food should be ok.

Do you have a heater in the tank? My Bettas were all very active until old age sets in.

My Betta is about a year old, and also goes into "standby" mode. He sometimes will rest on top of the plants, until a shrimp bothers him, then he springs back to life. d675f15088bb68647b2db0690060faea.jpg

Hey. It is definitely normal behaviour for a betta being passive and lazing around but the particular position that your betta is laying on its side is not the best of signs. Does he perhaps show any signs of swim bladder disorder?
