Bought some shrimp from my local LFS this weekend as a treat for my fishies, but at R15 a pop, this could become an expensive treat, so I was wondering if there is anybody here that could possibly help me with some info on how to breed your own shrimps for feeding purposes

WOW they sell shrimp up there. I would love to get my hands on some, especially cherry shrimp. Only privately owned down here. hard to come by.

I'm not sure how much of a response you are going to get here as shrimps are on the blacklist......

I've read up though that the 'magic' number of required shrimps are 20 in order to establish a good 'colony'. Never bred them myself though, so I'm not sure.

Sorry for breaking the rules here asking about a blacklisted species. But as with the Apple snails I enquired about a while ago (of which I have so many now, I'm going to start selling them to the restuarants LOL) , I thought they were ok as the LFS's were selling them. Will have to go and do some internet surfing then if that is the case.

Risen, I dont know what species the ones are that I got on Sunday, but they are kind of see-through, and the water they came with was light brown/muddy colour. Dont know if that helps with ID

sounds like you might have ghost shrimp...they need very low nitrates, are very intollorent of ammonia and nitrite. and require traces of iodine for exoskeleton replacement otherwise they will die.
