Hi guys, I'm away this weekend on a fishing trip at the vaal, if I'm not staring at fish in my aqarium, I'm catching them(and releasing obviously). I netted a carp and noticed that a shrimp ended up in it. I had no idea that there were freshwater shrimp in the Vaal, they look identical to ghost shrimp, I was just wondering if anyone actually knows what species they are, I snapped a pic and put it back, I have no intention of keeping it as I'm sure it's probably illegal as it may be indigenous or something, plus not even sure how they'd do in my tank.20210925_100602.jpg

Take a piece of lace curtain, make a net, and in the river under that hiasinth, just wiggle the net and you'll bag a lot of shrimp. Put 2 on a small hook, no weight and let it float in the river. Yellowfish and barbel staple diet. I use these small rod and reel for children, Hook a nice size yellow on that and it is Game On.

Caridina nilotica afaik. I think you can get a bait licence and collect them :)

Went fishing with a friend and his sons did the same thing. Old curtain close to the reeds. Caught quite a few. Not sure how beneficial they are to a tank

Be careful that you don’t introduce any other nasties to the tank.

If it is Caridina nilotica then you may collect them with a bait license, furthermore from what I’ve read they are very easy to keep and breed and primary eat algae,
A study conducted by R.C. Hart
Institute for Freshwater Studies, Rhodes University showed that the shrimp can survive in temps from 30C to 10C,
Feeding can be done with boiled spinach.
They are peaceful and do well with other fish
From others experience they say that Ph is variable but stick to reasonable limits (no coral sand and not mine water)
