Should i turn my aquarium lights off at night? I normally do so when i go to bed but does it even bother the fish? I know Plecos are nocturnal.

Yes. Plants only require 8 hours of light a day.

And lots of people are now gonna get very hot under the collar, but some of my best plant growth was from direct sunlight. For a couple of hours a day then close curtains.

+1 Donny there is nothing wrong with some of that good old sunlight that we get free

Franna you should put your lights off like Donny said and then of course your fish need to sleep as well

I've done that but with me the tank goes green within hours if i give it direct sunlight for a few hours. But i'm pretty sure other tanks will differ coz i don't really have the best filters etc.

I use to have a under ground filter in my tank and some Chinese algae eaters (much hated yes i know) and yes the gravel was a bit green but dam my plants grew. And the fish always seemed in good health 2 to 3 hours a day of direct light cant be bad :) and its free like Johan said :)

Donny I also find my plants flourishing with a bit of sunlight, luckily I have a UV light installed so the algae is non existant.
